The Semantic Web is a young discipline, even if only in comparison to other areas of computer science. Nonetheless, it already exhibits an interesting history and evolution. This book is a reflection on this evolution, aiming to take a snapshot of where we are at this specific point in time, and also showing what might be the focus of future research. This book provides both a conceptual and practical view of this evolution, especially targeted at readers who are starting research in this area and as support material for their supervisors. From a conceptual point of view, it highlights and discusses key questions that have animated the research community: what does it mean to be a Semantic Web system and how is it different from other types of systems, such as knowledge systems or web-based information systems? From a more practical point of view, the core of the book introduces a simple conceptual framework which characterizes Intelligent Semantic Web Systems. We describe this framework, the components it includes, and give pointers to some of the approaches and technologies that might be used to implement them. We also look in detail at concrete systems falling under the category of Intelligent Semantic Web Systems, according to the proposed framework, allowing us to compare them, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, and identify the key fundamental challenges still open for researchers to tackle.

Early hopes for Artificial Intelligence soon evaporated. But, driven by the need for smarter searching and advert placing, increasingly sophisticated algorithms, combined with the sheer amount of data on the Web, have led to a growing "Web intelligence". Gautam Shroff explores this trend, its conceptual basis, and what the future may hold.

The Internet has become an integral part of human life, yet the web still utilizes mundane interfaces to the physical world, which makes Internet operations somewhat mechanical, tedious, and less human-oriented. Filling a large void in the literature, Intelligent Technologies for Web Applications is one of the first books to focus on providing vital fundamental and advanced guidance in the area of Web intelligence for beginners and researchers. The book covers techniques from diverse areas of research, including: Natural language processing Information extraction, retrieval, and filtering Knowledge representation and management Machine learning Databases Data, web, and text mining Human–computer interaction Semantic web technologies To develop effective and intelligent web applications and services, it is critical to discover useful knowledge through analyzing large amounts of content, hidden content structures, or usage patterns of web data resources. Intended to improve and reinforce problem-solving methods in this area, this book delves into the hybridization of artificial intelligence (AI) and web technologies to help simplify complex Web operations. It introduces readers to the state-of-the art development of web intelligence techniques and teaches how to apply these techniques to develop the next generation of intelligent Web applications. The book lays out presented projects, case studies, and innovative ideas, which readers can explore independently as standalone research projects. This material facilitates experimentation with the book’s content by including fundamental tools, research directions, practice questions, and additional reading.

Semantic web technologies (SWTs) offer the richest machine-interpretable (rather than just machine-processable) and explicit semantics that are being extensively used in various domains and industries. This book provides a roadmap for semantic web technologies (SWTs) and highlights their role in a wide range of domains including cloud computing, Internet of Things, big data, sensor network, and so forth. It also explores the prospects of these technologies including different data interchange formats, query languages, ontologies, Linked Data, and notations. The role of SWTs in ‘epidemic Covid-19’, ‘e-learning platforms and systems’, ‘block chain’, ‘open online courses’, and ‘visual analytics in healthcare’ is described as well. This book: Explores all the critical aspects of semantic web technologies (SWTs) Discusses the impact of SWTs on cloud computing, Internet of Things, big data, and sensor network Offers a comprehensive examination of the emerging research in the areas of SWTs and their related domains Provides a template to develop a wide range of smart and intelligent applications Includes latest applications and examples with real data This book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in computer science, informatics, web technology, cloud computing, and Internet of Things.
