"International Cooperation in the Aerospace Industry offers a unique study and analysis of how nations and industries have cooperated internationally to design and manufacture civil and military aircraft from a variety of perspectives: historical, economic, organizational, operational and political. Covering Europe, North and South America, Asia and the Middle East, the author examines both the practical and managerial aspects of establishing and operating international programs and analyses the economic and political dynamics associated with international cooperation. A chapter is dedicated to description and comparison of the various organizational and legal structures that have historically been used as frameworks for cooperative programs. It also examines cooperative international activities in aerospace research and development, and international ventures in maintenance, repair and overhaul of operational aircraft. Throughout the book, practical examples of cooperative programs around the world are used to illustrate analytical themes, as well as a series of case studies of international cooperative aircraft programs of special political and economic significance. This comprehensive book will be a valuable resource for researchers and post graduate students specialising in aviation and aerospace management"--

This unique volume contains a powerful set of recommendations on issues at the center of international discussions on investment, trade, and technology policy. They take into account the globalization of industrial activity and the special characteristics of high-technology industries while recognizing the continued policy role of national governments. The book identifies the rationale for promotional measures for high-technology industries, delineates sources of friction among the leading industrial countries, and proposes policies to enhance international cooperation and strengthen the multilateral trading regime. This volume also examines the factors driving collaboration among otherwise competing firms and national programs, highlights the need to develop principles of equitable public and private international cooperation, and emphasizes the linkage between investment, government procurement, and other trade policies and prospects for enhanced international cooperation.

The granting of offsets to promote exports of major aircraft systems has been a source of significant controversy. Critics believe that offsets undermine the U.S. manufacturing base; lead to the transfer of commercial technology, possibly affecting national security; and result in the loss of high-wage jobs. Defenders of the practice argue that offsets are a fact of commercial life and can result in net U.S. job gains. In an effort to focus the offsets debate on analytical issues, the White House National Economic Council asked the National Research Council to convene expert academicians, representatives from the aerospace industry, and top government officials to discuss the impact of offsets on the U.S. economy. To ensure a rigorous discussion encompassing all points of view, the conference included a series of papers outlining the positions of key participants. This resulting volume offers a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the impact of aerospace offsets.

This book examines an event that never happened - a trade war between the US and the EC in respect of the civil aircraft builder, Airbus Industrie. By understanding this trade dispute, the author casts light on broader issues of international cooperation by focusing on the bilateral trade negotiations that took place between 1979 and 1992. He considers the role played by aerospace firms, the GATT and the transatlantic alliance in shaping this cooperative outcome.

"This title was first published in 2000: An examination of the most important international military aerospace collaboration programs of the past decade. Each chapter analyzes a particular collaborative project as well as developments within the relevant national aerospace industries. Several issues are addressed in each of the case studies: 1. The major reasons for cooperation and the major players in the decision making process; 2. The major political, economic and bureaucratic challenges facing military aerospace collaboration and how they have been resolved; 3. The bargains struck between national governments and how, and to what extent, domestic bureaucratic politics between aerospace industries, labour unions, the military and government organizations influence the final agreement; 4. The lessons learned from these case studies applied to future collaborative projects. Conclusions are drawn from a comparative analysis of the case studies and predicts future trends for international military aerospace cooperation."--Provided by publisher.
