This book considers how post-secondary chemistry education can be advanced in developing countries, in order to respond to emerging global, regional, and local needs. Taking Guyana as a case study, it pays particular attention to local challenges facing such territories, including human and financial resource shortages, tension between quality and quantity of graduates, cultural inequalities, unequal access to increasingly important Information and Communication Technology or Technologies (ICTs), and increasing competition from international universities in the developed world. Written by a team with over 70 years in combined teaching experience, it asks whether these challenges can be met and overcome and considers how tertiary chemistry education can better meet the rapidly changing needs of society. The authors examine the status quo of tertiary chemistry education in Guyana against the introductory backdrop of the internal and external stresses on the education system, before exploring selected best practices grounded in a three-pronged model focused on pedagogy, programming, and people. This book addresses issues related to the recruitment, preparation, and retention of STEM teachers. Focusing on recruitment specifically, it explores the strategies used to introduce biology majors to the teaching profession, increase their interest in teaching, and support their transition into teaching. Taking the Transformative and Innovative Practices in STEM Education (TIPS) program as a case study, it draws upon a wide range of data sources to contextualize the experiences of program participants, including reflections from participants and program staff, pre- and post- surveys, focus groups, and annual interviews. The authors present insights about their decision-making and use the data to help create illustrative examples of the STEM majors of color who choose to pursue teaching and to explore why others decide not to pursue teaching. It foregrounds the importance of recruiting STEM teachers of color for urban districts, the role of culture and identity in the decision-making process, and the role played by professional development and mentoring. With emphasis on recruiting STEM majors at a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), the book ultimately provides strategies for increasing collaboration across departments, supporting and mentoring students, and addressing cultural and institutional barriers that STEM majors face when transitioning into teacher education. This book demonstrates that using visualisation processes in mathematics education can help to enhance teaching and learning and bridge the inequality gap that exists between well-resourced and under-resourced schools in Southern Africa. Drawing on classroom research conducted in the Southern African region, it examines how epistemological access in a context of gross inequality can be constructively addressed by providing research-based solutions and recommendations. The book outlines the visualisation process as an integral but often overlooked process of mathematics teaching and learning. It goes beyond the traditional understanding of visualisation processes such as picture forming and using tools and considers visualisation processes that are semiotic in nature and includes actions such as gestures in combination with language. It adds value to the visualisation in mathematics education research discourse and deliberation in Africa.
