Irish English Relations A History In Documents

In 1919, Prime Minister David Lloyd George of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland noted that “there is a path of fatality which pursues the relations between the two countries and makes them eternally at cross purposes.” For better or worse, Ireland has frequently been defined by its relationship with its neighbor to the east. And for centuries, English monarchs and governments have struggled with what they came to term “the Irish Question.” Through 76 primary source documents, contextualized by informative introductions and annotations, this volume explores the political, economic, and cultural impacts of the relationship between Ireland and England.

A collection of readings designed to supplment Irish history courses, this book includes religious documents, early statues, Acts of Parliaments, speeches, proclamations, poems and many other civil, religious, and politcal selections to fundamental to understanding Ireland's rich history.

The Act of Union, coming into effect on 1 January 1801, portended the integration of Ireland into a unified, if not necessarily uniform, community. This volume treats the complexities, perspectives, methodologies and debates on the themes of the years between 1801 and 1879. Its focus is the making of the Union, the Catholic question, the age of Daniel O'Connell, the famine and its consequences, emigration and settlement in new lands, post-famine politics, religious awakenings, Fenianism, the rise of home rule politics and emergent feminism.

This book reproduces the texts of the most important documents and speeches in the course of Irish history from 1800 to the present day. Among the documents reproduced are the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant of 1912 which formed the basis of the Ulster Unionist resistance to Home Rule, a campaign which eventually resulted in the establishment of Norhtern Ireland; the Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland at the time of the Easter Rebellion of 1916; the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1922; the manifesto of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association of 1968; and the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985.

This landmark series of three volumes brings together selected essays from leading and specialist journals that have made a significant or original contribution to Irish historiography. Each volume contains a range of articles reappraising the major political themes of the period, but also offering new interpretations on social, economic, cultural and religious history, as well as women's history and historical geography. Introductions to each volume explain the specific and wider significance of the articles.
