Popularisation of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) is a process of communicating and appropriating scientific and technological knowledge among broad sectors of the population. This process, however, must contribute to an effective integration of a number of historical, cultural, political, social and economic situations; and make such knowledge a central component of the culture of social awareness and collective intelligence. The possibilities of gaining access to information are changing our vision while transforming the relationship between human beings, and the appropriation and dissemination of knowledge. Today, access to STI related knowledge is synonymous with development, well-being and improving quality of life. In this context, S&T literacy is a social and ethical right of all human beings. But developing countries face formidable challenges in increasing the capacity to store, retrieve and transmit S&T information. For this reason, the areas to be reached by STI must be broadened to integrate formal education and communication with informal efforts; while also making scientific and technological knowledge available to the ordinary citizen. This book includes 14 papers contributed by researchers, scientists, experts and professionals from 9 different developing countries namely Bhutan, Cuba, India, Iran, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Togo and Zimbabwe. And each paper gives significant insight into various policies and strategies that are being adopted or need to be adopted by the developing countries to ensure effective communication and popularisation of scientific knowledge.

Asia is the largest continent in the world. Five out of the top ten high performing economies in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 are located in Asia. Why do Asian students perform so well in STEM-related subjects? This book answers this by examining the STEM education policies and initiatives in Asian economies, as well as the training programmes undertaken by STEM teachers in Asia. The book is broken into four sections, each accompanied by a passage of commentary that summarizes the key takeaways of the chapters. Section one focuses on STEM policy environments and how various countries have developed policies that promote STEM as an integral part of national economic development. Section two focuses on STEM teacher education in the Philippines and Thailand, while section three focuses on STEM curriculum design, context, and challenges in four Asian economies. The fourth and final section focuses on presenting snapshots of STEM education research efforts in Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore. Written by Asian academics, this book will provide valuable insights to policy makers, educators, and researchers interested in the topic of STEM education, especially in the Asian context. Although the government has initiated various policies incorporating technology into education, the digital gap persists, obstructing equitable access to learning resources in rural and urban parts of Bhutan. The article specifies socio-economic factors, feasibility challenges, and gaps in training as factors that led to the digital divide. The article also identifies the importance of political initiatives in development of infrastructures and policy decisions, focusing on comprehensive and inclusive governmental policies for both rural and urban settings. The article recommends citizenship actions to curb the issues of the digital divide, including more budget allocation, subsidized internet services and charges, digital literacy programs, and teacher and student professional development, especially in rural settings. However, issues such as increased budget approval, implementation of policy, infrastructural limitations, and diverse linguistic settings in rural areas still remain challenges. Solving the digital gap is of paramount importance for Bhutan's overall socio-economic development, increasing educational and employment opportunities, and facilitating innovation in both urban and rural communities. The article suggests collaborative actions from stakeholders for digitally inclusive Bhutan and highlights recommendations for policymakers, educators, and communities.

Tigers of the Snow is true story of the tragedy and survival on one of the world's most dangerous mountains. In 1922 Himalayan climbers were British gentlemen, and their Sherpa and Tibetan porters were "coolies," unskilled and inexperienced casual laborers. By 1953 Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stood on the summit of Everest, and the coolies had become the "Tigers of the Snow." Jonathan Neale's absorbing book is both a compelling history of the oft-forgotten heroes of mountaineering and a gripping account of the expedition that transformed the Sherpas into climbing legends. In 1934 a German-led team set off to climb the Himalayan peak of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain on earth. After a disastrous assault in 1895, no attempt had been made to conquer the mountain for thirty-nine years. The new Nazi government was determined to prove German physical superiority to the rest of the world. A heavily funded expedition was under pressure to deliver results. Like all climbers of the time, they did not really understand what altitude did to the human body. When a hurricane hit the leading party just short of the summit, the strongest German climbers headed down and left the weaker Germans and the Sherpas to die on the ridge. What happened in the next few days of death and fear changed forever how the Sherpa climbers thought of themselves. From that point on, they knew they were the decent and responsible people of the mountain. Jonathan Neale interviewed many old Sherpa men and women, including Ang Tsering, the last man off Nanga Parbat alive in 1934.
