The COVID-19 pandemic has provided a unique opportunity to examine our understanding of the opportunities and challenges that ICTs offer to support the functioning of all aspects of education. In the training of digital skills, the instrumental mastery of ICT continues to outweigh the preparation of citizens to make constructive and safe use of technologies. After two decades of educational policies, we continue to reduce digital literacy to instrumental skills. This book shows the results of research in different countries on how to measure digital competence among future generations of teachers and facing the challenges brought by the convergence of analogue and digital media. This book provides answers to the research questions: How should the key competencies related to media pedagogy be effectively measured and compared? What is the level of digital literacy of pre-service teachers in selected countries? The individual chapters are based on a systematic review of research results (from the last two decades) to show trends related to changes in measurement and levels of digital competence. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning, EC-TEL 2012, held in Saarbrücken, Germany, in September 2012. This book describes and explains how digital technologies enter adolescents’ everyday life and learning in different contexts and environments. The book is based on research conducted in recent years in the Czech Republic, the results of which are set within a broad theoretical and international framework. The authors consider the theoretical and methodological anchoring of the topic, describing various approaches in an effort to comprehensively describe and understand the learning process of today’s pupils. They focus on ways to explore learning in the digital era, domestication of digital technology in families, and parents' approaches to digital technology. Attention is paid to adolescents’ competences and autonomy in the use of digital technologies, as well as their views on technology in their lives and learning. The authors summarize the most important results of the research, but also consider the options of empirical research and their own experience with the research of such a complex concept.
