Excerpt from J. Wilbur Chapman: A Biography For more than a quarter of a century Dr. J. Wilbur Chapman was a potent presence and a formative force in the councils and activities of the evangelical church. He was conspicuous, not as one who sought preferment or place, but as one who, "for Christ's sake and the Gospel's," gave himself to the service of his fellowmen. He was great among us in that he was the servant of all. Though he was unique there was no singularity in his person or his ministry. He had no eccentricities of manner or of speech, nor did he need such aids. He was heard, and heard gladly, in all parts of the world because of an undertone of reality, a ring of certainty, a note of conviction: all of which were constant in his personality and directed his simple yet cogent and sinewy speech. Throughout his ministry Dr. Chapman maintained a high conception of his office. This he magnified and was himself thereby enlarged. A man among men, he was genial, jovial, ready of wit; yet ever and everywhere a minister of Jesus Christ. Although clericalism was to him an abomination he was always the clergyman. As an ambassador of Christ he was loyal to the commission and the message he received. He faithfully delivered his message, and his ministry was therefore effective and fruitful. Most people want to live forever. They desire long, healthy, fulfilling lives. But God has a bigger, better plan, though it comes at a cost. There is a training process that we need to go through. More than that, a complete change of heart is needed – we must be born again. And to follow Christ, our will must be submitted to His will, and our lives must be filled with His Spirit. There is only one way to eternal life. The Apostle Peter signed up for a life like that. He left his career, his family, and whatever meager enjoyments he might have had to follow a humble, nondescript Teacher named Jesus. During those three years of training, Peter was taught by the Master. Some of those lessons were not easy at all; yet Peter was given grace in the eyes of the Lord, and when he fell, the Lord forgave him, strengthened him, and kept him to the end. What about you? Do you need courage, strengthening, and training? In this book, J. Wilbur Chapman admonishes, teaches, and encourages. Chapman's love for the Lord and for His people shines clearly in his messages. He expounds on Scripture, relates real-life stories, and tells us about the only way to be saved – and how we may experience the fullness of life in Christ.

A plainspoken follower of Jesus, Dwight L. Moody embodies passionate, unflinching obedience to God. It’s 1860, the eve of America’s Gilded Age. A man in a gray, woolen suit stands in a dilapidated building in Chicago’s “Little Hell,” a slum forgotten by the world. He is surrounded by grimy children, attentive and watchful in this makeshift school Moody established just for them. They are waiting for Abraham Lincoln to speak. Why America’s greatest president and one of America’s most celebrated spiritual giants are among the poorest of the poor is just the beginning of D.L. Moody, a biography with a novel-like narrative style that unveils the eternal power one life can have. This book reintroduces the unlikely accomplishments of a man desperate to obey God’s call and shows how one committed heart can impact the kingdom of God and the spiritual heritage of a nation. We learn about life through the lives of others. Their experiences, their trials, their adventures become our schools, our chapels, our playgrounds. Christian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church through prose as accessible and concise as it is personal and engaging. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. Whether the person is D.L. Moody, Sergeant York, Saint Nicholas, John Bunyan, or William F. Buckley, we are now living in the world that they created and understand both it and ourselves better in the light of their lives. Their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires uniquely illuminate our shared experience.
