"Myths & Legends of Japan" is one of the first western books about Japan. Although the author didn't visit the country himself, he collected the works of Lafcadio Hearn, Basil Chamberlain's "Things Japanese," researched various translations of the Kojiki and the Nihongi, and prepared one of the most thorough research pieces on the Japanese culture of the time.
