This book is an outcome of sheer hard work of successful candidates. Previously; I had given thought to publish the success stories last year too but it could not materialize. Subsequently; when I came in contact with successful candidates; I realized that some had so unique journeys that I could not resist myself to give shape to the idea which was in mind since long. Again; the question arose to whom should I approach since I had known only limited number of successful candidates. In this book you will find a unique success pattern of each successful officer. Some of them come from backward areas; some have average educational qualification; so that you may realize that successful candidates not born with a silver spoon. Some of them were already in job; it is interesting to see how they could sale through their arduous journey and made it to the destination.

This book contains the answers to the general doubts we have when we start the preparation for UPSC. From my personal experiences, I have tried to addressed some of the issues and how one can prepare. This book is divided into various chapters which have questions related to ‘before UPSC times’ i.e. when I failed in IIT even after taking a drop at Kota and my college life where I wasn’t sure as to where life will take me, ‘during UPSC times’ i.e. when I was preparing for the UPSC and ‘after UPSC’ where questions related to Mussoorie and Hyderabad academies, life of civil servants in general have been answered. I want to put a disclaimer in the beginning itself that this book doesn’t cover any part of the UPSC syllabus and this book is just to motivate and help you strategize your way to fight UPSC and any other life struggle for that matter. I would recommend readers not to ‘study’ this book but ‘read’ it which means that go through this book at leisure time. Pick up the book whenever you are in doubt, feel depressed or want to quit. This book can be your favorite companion during tough times. You will be able to learn few things from my mistakes, you might laugh at few moments, you may picture yourself as a successful candidate while reading this book. This book, aims at doing 2 things: first, to provide the aspirants of UPSC CSE with a one stop solution to their most basic doubts, and second, to give them a solid foundation as they begin preparation. The idea of this book was mine but the execution was not mine alone. It required a lot of support and at times push from many people to finish the work. But, if I were to dedicate this book, it would surely be to, two sets of people, my family and the millions of aspirants. My family has always supported me and stood by me. They have always pushed me to do whatever I wished to and do it well. They also provided guidance whenever I needed it. The act of attempting to write a book, even while it is unpremeditated, stems from my instinctive desire to narrate the incidents and the events of my life that may induce reader's curiosity to know the kind of efforts one makes, challenges one faces, hurdles one crosses, and the encounters one experiences in achieving one's cherished goal, and once the 'dream come true', the kind of trajectory that follows. May be the narrative is found to be a wholesome package, encompassing major facets of life: efforts, hardships, achievements, human relations, values, emotions, beliefs, ideas and much more! Finally, it may turn out to be an unostentatious account of events as put forth by a plain-speaking individual who loves enjoying every bit of invigorating journey called life! About the Author: Sarban Singh is an IAS officer of the 1983 batch, Haryana Cadre. He was working as Additional Chief Secretary, Haryana (in the Apex scale), when he took voluntary retirement in July 2014 to join the Haryana Right to Service Commission, of which he held the charge of Chief Commissioner by the time he completed his five years tenure. Before joining IAS, he served in the Indian Economic Service. Prior to that, he had a brief stint in the banking sector. Having been to a dozen countries, his one year stay in the U.K. earned him M.Phil. in Economic Planning from the University of Glasgow. Surely, the storyteller will take the reader along at every step of the fascinating journey of more than four decades of a boy, for whom dreams are made to happen in real-time and precede the actual world.
