Key Competencies In The Knowledge Society

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the IFIP TC 3 International Conference, KCKS 2010, held as a part of the 21th World Computer Congress, WCC 2010, in Brisbane, Australia, in September 2010. The 43 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The range of issues cover many aspects of ICT in relation to competencies in the knowledge society; they present theory, research, applications and practical experiences on topics including but not limited to developing creativity, digital solidarity, e-management in education, informatics and programming knowledge technologies, lifelong learning, policy development, teacher(s) in a knowledge society, e-inclusion, AGORA: the IFIP initiative on lifelong learning, collective intelligence, digital literacy, educating ict professionals, formal and informal learning, innovations of assessment, networking and collaboration, problem solving teacher learning & creativity as well as teaching & learning 2.0.

Higher education policy has increasingly gained a European dimension, with its own distinct influence over national education policies. Against this background, a major project was launched, the REFLEX project, which aims to make a contribution to assessing the demands that the modern knowledge society places on higher education graduates, and the degree to which higher education institutions in Europe are up to the task of equipping graduates with the competencies needed to meet these demands. The project also looks at how the demands, and graduates’ ability to realise them, is influenced by the way in which work is organised in firms and organisations. The REFLEX project has been carried out in sixteen different countries and consisted of a large scale survey among some 70.000 graduates. This report presents the major findings and draws important policy implications.

The dynamics of schooling and learning are central issues to debate modernity. As they represent an essential feature of socializing processes in contemporary societies, they gather the ambivalences related to the production of individuals in modernity. On the other hand, these dynamics occur in a context of enlarged globalization, despite implying specific local translations, often composite. This book raises some questions concerning schooling in modern societies. What means learning in a globalized world? Does lifelong learning introduce new challenges to knowledge and the scholastic form of transmission? Are competences prevailing as a new form of qualification in modern societies? How teachers deal with these new professional dilemmas?

This publication contains a number of working papers which examine the growing importance of curricula development, the quality of educational provision and key educational competencies to address identified socio-economic and political priorities. In the light of these challenges, the papers discuss what competencies are considered to be important in contributing to sustainable development, social welfare, cohesion and justice, as well as to personal well-being.

This book is concerned with the social and political aspects of regional groupings, particularly how citizenship education fares in regional contexts. The European Union (EU) has revolutionised its political and economic aims into more encompassing social and political goals. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), on the other hand, is still moving towards fuller integration in social and economic terms as South East Asian nations seek a greater role on the global stage and particularly in the global economy. Both the EU and ASEAN have drawn up educational frameworks that collectively work to harness educational achievements which in turn work to fulfill social and economic objectives at the regional level. The title of this anthology mirrors the theme of the 9th Nordic Conference on Adult Education and Learning. The caption reflects how adult education plays an integral part in our societies by advancing new learning that generates possibilities to address contemporary challenges. While the chapters reflect the wide variety of research connected to the field of adult education, the authors agree on the ideal of combining the development of work life competences with the promotion of democratic empowerment, as demonstrated in the tradition of Nordic adult education.

This is Book V in the series, Research on Education in Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. The series strives to encourage the presentation of evidence based investigations using data collected on site from the three world regions it considers. A strong focus is on data specific to a nation or to a region within a nation, as we recognize that nations are diverse, often encompassing regions with unique cultural and geographic characteristics. The data are rooted in the voices of individuals and communities. Such evidential data are analyzed and interpreted within the context of the complex human and natural environments from which they are derived. Chapters in the books within the series describe investigations that are part of an effort to continue the publication of an annual compilation of research studies in the three world regions upon which the series focuses. The series, therefore, indicates that the need to develop modern, self-sufficient, independent, and post-colonial societies is being balanced with the need to strengthen cultural values and identities within these three world regions. Book V in the series focuses on how the educational challenges found in these three world regions are addressed. The chapters specifically examine related recent research, identify useful investigative methodologies, identify accomplishments in meeting challenges, and consider unresolved challenges. The overarching questions presented below were derived from an analysis of the questions, methods, and conclusions presented in the studies appearing in this book. These overarching questions described here reflect the connections between educational issues that emerged in the 20thcentury and issues identified in the 21st century.
