Over 200 edible plants comprehensively described with hundreds of photographs and descriptions of how to gather and process them. This book is small enough to be carried in a backback and would be very useful to hikers, tourists, tour operators, residents of the Kimberley region and anyone interested in bush tucker or to identify flora of the region. Before the colonisation of Australia, Aboriginal Australians lived on a wonderful larder of fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meat, in a land largely free from disease, with more exercise, less stress and supportive communities. Today, in Aboriginal communities all over Australia, there are higher instances of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, renal disease, some types of cancer and lung diseases than in the general population. This book is an attempt to preserve bush tucker knowledge for future generations of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to ensure the information is not lost with the passing of Elders. The authors describe over 350 species of the edible plants and fungi that were regularly gathered by the Indigenous peoples of the Kimberley in Western Australia before and after colonisation. Many of these plants and fungi are difficult to find today because of land clearing for crops and the farming of sheep and cattle.

A language book and field guide incorporating Bunuba peoples' knowledge of plants that grow on Bunuba muwayi (country); their traditional uses and stories. Plant profiles are listed by plant type (e.g. tree, shrub etc.). They include colour photographs and detailed information for identifying each plant species; the plant's Bunuba language name, common name and scientific name; information about its traditional uses; a seasonal calendar showing flowering and fruiting times; and a symbol identifying plants that are particularly vulnerable to fire.The book also includes information about different types of muwayi (country); garuwa (water places); a Bunuba language pronunciation guide; brief introductions to related matters, i.e. winthali (fire) and animals; and a list of additional plants with brief information about their names and traditional uses.
