La Cena De Le Ceneri

Giordano Bruno was an itinerant Italian friar who was burned at the stake in 1600 for heresies, which included his rejection of the Ptolemaic cosmology. Of his important writings, 'La Cena de le ceneri' was one of the first works in which Copernican theory had impact outside the sphere of the natural sciences. Arguing for the physical reality of the infinite universe with no centre, Bruno sought to prove that each man is every man, that conflict would be resolved if all men accepted the unifying potential of his hermetic religion. Using this radical cosmology, Bruno sought to heal the secular and religious wounds of sixteenth-century Europe.

This innovative survey of large choral-orchestral works is a continuation of the author's previous study of twentieth century works with English texts. Green examines nearly one hundred works, from Rachmaninov's Vesna to Penderecki's Song of Songs. For each work, he provides a biography of the composer, complete instrumentation, text sources, editions, availability of performing materials, performance issues, discography, and bibliography of the composer and the work. Based upon direct score study, each work has been evaluated in terms of potential performance problems, rehearsal issues, and level of difficulty for both the choir and orchestra. When present, solo roles are described. The composers represented in this work include Bela Bartok, Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Bloch, Maurice Duruf , Hans Werner Henze, Paul Hindemith, Arthur Honegger, Leos Janacek, Gy rgy Ligeti, Gustav Mahler, Carl Orff, Krzysztof Penderecki, Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern, and Kurt Weill. Written as a field guide for conductors and others involved in programming concerts for choir and orchestra, this text will prove a useful source of new repertoire ideas and an invaluable aid to rehearsal preparation.

This study is concerned with Giordano Bruno's ars memoriae and the relation between his works on mnemonics and philosophy in the first phase of his reflection (1582–1585). The hermeneutic hypothesis that will be explored is that it is Giordano Bruno's De umbris idearum that first reveals his new elaboration of the notion of order, which will then be further unfolded in the philosophical works published in London, especially in the notions of nature, language, and praxis developed therein. The research statement is explored into more detail on a methodological level, through a discussion of Hans Blumenberg's interpretation of Giordano Bruno, and on an analytical level, through a metaphorological interpretation of the inward writing and the shadow metaphors in the De umbris idearum.
