This study presents information on trends in working and employment conditions in the 10 new EU member states within a year of their accession. By comparing them with the other EU member states it provides insights into general trends that we may expect - between convergence and diversity - in an enlarged EU. The volume, produced by a working group of leading experts in this field, provides information on practices at enterprise level through a series of case studies in new member states; and identifies how the different elements of the world of work, employment contracts, working time, wages, social dialogue and workers' participation, reconciliation of work and family, are combined.

Increasingly flexible labour markets and reforms of old-age pension systems are still ranking high on the political agenda of European countries. This volume investigates whether, and to what extent, the interplay between pension reforms and the spread of 'atypical' employment patterns and fragmented careers has a negative influence uponeconomic security in old age. The volume, therefore, analyzes the flexibility-security nexus by focusing on the post-retirement phase, thus extending the conventional narrow concept of 'flexicurity'. The book also questions whetherreforms of public and private pension schemes compensate or aggravate the risks of increasingly flexible labor markets and atypical employment careers after retirement? Around this overarching research question, the various contributions in the volume employ the same analytical framework in order to map, and then compare, the developments in seven European countries - Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK which present different labour market arrangements and various degrees of flexibility, as well as diverse pension systems.

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this monograph on Cyprus not only describes and analyses the legal aspects of labour relations, but also examines labour relations practices and developing trends. It provides a survey of the subject that is both usefully brief and sufficiently detailed to answer most questions likely to arise in any pertinent legal setting. Both individual and collective labour relations are covered in ample detail, with attention to such underlying and pervasive factors as employment contracts, suspension of the contracts, dismissal laws and covenant of non-competition, as well as international private law. The author describes all important details of the law governing hours and wages, benefits, intellectual property implications, trade union activity, employers’ associations, workers’ participation, collective bargaining, industrial disputes, and much more. Building on a clear overview of labour law and labour relations, the book offers practical guidance on which sound preliminary decisions may be based. It will find a ready readership among lawyers representing parties with interests in Cyprus, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative trends in laws affecting labour and labour relations.

This book investigates four core characteristics of occupational health and safety legal systems in order to provide a comparative and critical analysis of the similarities and differences in protecting the health and safety of workers at the workplace. In addition to analysing the health and safety regulations, the book addresses corresponding oversight and enforcement mechanisms. It compares and contrasts five different legal systems, namely those of the EU, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and China. Beyond offering an overview of the modes of OHS regulation, instruments and legal enforcement practices, the book helps to answer the question of how to improve working environments in order to protect workers from all kinds of dangers encountered at the workplace. The intended readership includes researchers with a background in labour law, comparative law, Chinese law and/or European Union law.
