The crisis in Central America and the Caribbean has led to an increased number of books, articles, and studies on Latin America. The role of the United States in Latin America, both in history and at the present time, is receiving new attention and examination. Renewed interest in the foreign policies of Latin American countries and in democracy and redemocratization is reflected in the literature. This comprehensive reference is intended as a sequel to two previously published works: Latin America, 1967-1979: Social Science Information Sources and Latin America, 1979-1983: A Social Science Bibliography. It contains titles of books, monographs, articles, and chapters that have been published through 1987, and it provides up-to-date and in-depth listings of available materials on Latin America. This expansive work will prove especially useful for university and college faculties as well as for librarians who provide guidance to students researching Latin America.

In 1987 the acute economic crisis in which Latin America and the Caribbean have been plunged since the beginning of the decade worsened. At the same time as the rate of economic growth fell, inflation sped up markedly, and the results achieved by the external sector, albeit more satisfactory, were limited to a very small number of countries.

First Published in 1994. Volume 6 in the 7-volume series titled Essays on Mexico, Central and South America: Scholarly Debates from the 1950s to the 1990s. The central scholarly articles concern interstate peace along with a U.S. propensity to intervene, and international structural vulnerabilities and economic asymmetries along with the significance of elite skills and choices. This title recognises that scholars have paid more attention to international economics in Latin America and seeks to balance the range study.

In 1988, the economic crisis of Latin America and the Caribbean took a dramatic turn. For the first time since the 1981-1983 recession, the per capita product declined to a level equivalent to that of 1978; inflation almost quadrupled to an unprecedented average of 760%, and real incomes declined in most of the countries.
