Addressing the relationship between law and the visual, this book examines the importance of photography in Central, East, and Southeast European show trials. The dispensation of justice during communist rule in Albania, East Germany, and Poland was reliant on legal propaganda, making the visual a fundamental part of the legitimacy of the law. Analysing photographs of trials, this book examines how this message was conveyed to audiences watching and participating in the spectacle of show trials. The book traces how this use of the visual was exported from the Soviet Union and imposed upon its satellite states in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It shows how the legal actors and political authorities embraced new photographic technologies to advance their legal propaganda and legal photography. Drawing on contemporary theoretical work in the area, the book then challenges straightforward accounts of the relationship between law and the visual, critically engaging entrenched legal historical narratives, in relation to three different protagonists, to offer the possibility of reclaiming and rewriting past accounts. As its analysis demonstrates, the power of images can also be subversive; and, as such, the cases it addresses contribute to the discourse on visual epistemology and open onto contemporary questions about law and its inherent performativity. Essays on the Awareness of Loss in Contemporary Albanian Literature: Voices that Come fom the Abyss is the first scholarly monograph on the concept of loss in Albanian poetry and life writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It represents the first academic contribution to an international audience dedicated to three women writers that personified loss in communist Albania and two eminent poets who wrote representative and outstanding poetry on the meaning of loss in Albanian literature. Through the work of these three politically persecuted women writers and two modern poets, this book analyzes loss in relation to pain, grief, memory, death, freedom, and love inquiring on the meeting point between life writing and poetry, and the point where they part ways. The book explores the work of: Musine Kokalari, the first Albanian woman writer and political dissident; Bedi Pipa, the first woman known to have authored a diary in Albanian literature; Drita Çomo, author of a diary and poetry written in secret in political exile under communism; Fatos Arapi the Albanian poet who has been awarded the most important international literary prize to date and who has elaborated on the ethical implications of freedom, grief and death in relation to (personal) loss; Ali Podrimja a cornerstone of contemporary Albanian poetry, author of a volume that marked a definite turn to modernity in Albanian poetry in the Republic of Kosova and to date one of the best volumes of poetry written in the history of Albanian literature Lum Lumi, where he explores the depth of grief, pain, loss and love. In Legal Spectatorship Kelli Moore traces the political origins of the concept of domestic violence through visual culture in the United States. Tracing its appearance in Article IV of the Constitution, slave narratives, police notation, cybernetic theories of affect, criminal trials, and the “look” of the battered woman, Moore contends that domestic violence refers to more than violence between intimate partners—it denotes the mechanisms of racial hierarchy and oppression that undergird republican government in the United States. Moore connects the use of photographic evidence of domestic violence in courtrooms, which often stands in for women’s testimony, to slaves’ silent experience and witnessing of domestic abuse. Drawing on Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, abolitionist print culture, courtroom witness testimony, and the work of Hortense Spillers, Moore shows how the logic of slavery and antiblack racism also dictates the silencing techniques of the contemporary domestic violence courtroom. By positioning testimony on contemporary domestic violence prosecution within the archive of slavery, Moore demonstrates that domestic violence and its image are haunted by black bodies, black flesh, and black freedom.
