Excerpt from Lays of the Land of the Maori and Moa To Sir George Grey, K.C.B. Within a forest stood a grand old tree, Whose head above the other plants rose high; He was the forests first-born. Sun and sky Had known him, and had smiled on him ere he Had kinsfolk near, or leafy brethren nigh; The wild birds brought to him their minstrelsy; The singers knew that when the scene was rude, He grew and gave a shelter to their race. By him the wandering melodists were wooed To trill and warble in that lonely place; A sanctuary in the solitude He gave to them. In him the birds could trace The forest's king, and so from hills and plains They flew to him, and sang their sweetest strains. Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the "Other." The treacherous "redskin" and the "Indian maiden," embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty.

Who are the Maori of New Zealand? How did they get here and how did they settle the country? What are the main tribal groups in New Zealand, and where are they based? The first publication to come out of the online Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand project tells the story of the tangata whenua of Aotearoa, from their journeys across the vast Pacific Ocean to the histories of all the major iwi, including the contemporary issues they face today. No other book brings together in one place all these tribal histories. Based on the latest research and generously illustrated in full colour with superb mapping and photographs, this rich resource is an essential part of 'our' nation's story and fills an important gap in the history of New Zealand.
