Le Théâtre d'Art apparut sous différentes formes et dans divers pays d'Europe pour la première fois à la fin du XIXe siècle. Paul Fort, son créateur en 1891, utilise le premier cette notion de 'Théâtre d'Art'. Ce dernier était conçu sur la base de la culture et de la tradition européennes, en opposition au théâtre anachronique, commercial et bourgeois, et était structuré sur l'esprit, la conscience humaine et les idéaux de liberté et de vérité. Cette étude est consacrée au parcours créatif du Théâtre d'Art polonais autrement nommé Reduta, et à ses origines, ses sources d'inspiration et son activité. Construit sur du texte poétique, il devient le théâtre privilégié de la voix, de la récitation, donnant ainsi la préférence aux oeuvres classiques. Le Théâtre d'Art polonais - Reduta, créé par Juliusz Osterwa et Mieczystaw Limanowski, a mené un combat permanent contre la dégradation de l'art scénique et les transformations esthétiques, restant fidèle aux traditions. On peut situer ce théâtre dans un courant européen de renouveau artistique, et suivre son évolution à travers une multitude d'événements artistiques. Ce livre en montre les aspects innovateurs et les transformations au cours sa longue existence.

The complex nature of the relationship between theatre and politics is explored in this study of the Polish theatre scene. It traces the development of the alternative theatre movement from its origins, in the 1950s, through to its decline in the late 1980s.

This collection of essays and reviews represents the most significant and comprehensive writing on Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors. Miola's edited work also features a comprehensive critical history, coupled with a full bibliography and photographs of major productions of the play from around the world.
