Die Republiken wurden in den 1620er und 1630er Jahren in Leiden und Amsterdam gedruckt und avancierten zu Grundlagentexten der frühneuzeitlichen Staatenkunde. Zunächst verfolgt die Untersuchung die Verbreitung der Bände in Buchsammlungen und Bibliotheken des 17. Jahrhunderts und liefert so neue Erkenntnisse zu verschiedenen Leser- und Nutzergruppen der Republiken sowie ihrer prominenten Rolle auf dem frühneuzeitlichen Buchmarkt. Weiter verfolgt die Studie anhand dreier Fallstudien – der Republik der Niederlande, des spanischen Weltreichs sowie des safawidischen Persien – die Funktionen der Bände im Wissenschaftsbetrieb sowie die Text-, Ideen- und politischen Traditionen, in denen sie stehen. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the earliest and most notable early modern book series of state descriptions, the ‘Republics’. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s, the Republics evolved into foundational works of early modern political studies. By first tracing the volumes’ circulation and presence in book collections and libraries in the seventeenth century, this study provides fresh insights into their diverse readerships as well as their prominent role in the early modern book market. It then delves into their various academic purposes and their textual, intellectual, and political traditions through selected case studies on the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Empire, and Safavid Persia.

In the internet age, the need for effective consumer law enforcement has arguably never been greater. This timely book is a comparative law and economic analysis of the changing landscape of EU consumer law enforcement policy. EU member states are moving away from purely public or private law enforcement and now appear to be moving towards a more mixed approach, not least due to European legislation. This book reflects on the need for and creation of efficient enforcement designs. It examines the various economic factors according to which the efficiency of different enforcement mechanisms can be assessed. Hypothetical case scenarios within package travel and misleading advertising, dealing with substantial individual harm and trifling and widespread harm are used to illustrate various consumer law problems. Design suggestions on how to optimally mix enforcement mechanisms for these case scenarios are developed. The findings are then used as a benchmark to assess real life situations in countries with different enforcement traditions - the Netherlands, Sweden and England. The book is of value to both researchers and policy-makers working in the area of consumer protection.

This book is the first detailed survey of absenteeism in Europe. It is the result of a research carried out by the partners of the EU project "Absenteeism - Strategies, Concepts and Materials to Fight Truancy" in 17 European countries. The country reports include detailed information about national statistics on absenteeism as well as general strategies and exemplary projects to fight truancy The book is completed by summarized recommendations for dealing with the problem of absenteeism and includes a glossary.

With the New Approach, the EU has incorporated European standardisation in its regulatory approach to improve the free movement of goods. Such a New Approach does not exist for services. Nevertheless, a significant number of European services standards have been made. This book focuses on European standardisation of services and its impact on private law. Two services sectors are analysed: the healthcare sector and the tourism sector. The core chapters of the book contain a number of case studies based on empirical research in these sectors. The first part discusses how European services standards interact with existing legal regulation at the European and national level. It is shown that, at the European level, there is no clear legal framework in which European services standards are adopted. This has an impact on their application in private law, which is the main theme of the second part of the book. Moreover, there is a real risk that European services standards create obstacles to free movement. This will prevent their successful application in private law.
