Weiter verfolgt die Studie anhand dreier Fallstudien – der Republik der Niederlande, des spanischen Weltreichs sowie des safawidischen Persien – die Funktionen der Bände im Wissenschaftsbetrieb sowie die Text-, Ideen- und politischen Traditionen, in denen sie stehen. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the earliest and most notable early modern book series of state descriptions, the ‘Republics’. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s, the Republics evolved into foundational works of early modern political studies. By first tracing the volumes’ circulation and presence in book collections and libraries in the seventeenth century, this study provides fresh insights into their diverse readerships as well as their prominent role in the early modern book market. It then delves into their various academic purposes and their textual, intellectual, and political traditions through selected case studies on the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Empire, and Safavid Persia.

The education of lawyers does not end with the law degree. Continuing legal education is of central importance for legal professionals and the whole of legal industry. Both the education sector and the legal sector are undergoing profound change due to new business models and information technology. Providers of continuing legal education and universities in particular are therefore confronted with various questions and challenges. The Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich, as the leading provider in Switzerland, therefore held a conference on February 15 and 16, on the occasion of which these questions and challenges were discussed. The conference featured speakers from universities, law firms and associations as well as companies from Switzerland, Germany, the UK and the US. The individual presentations provided insight into the state of continuing legal education in the respective countries and addressed topics such as legal innovation, digitization, the role of law schools, and expectations from legal practice regarding continuing legal education.

The Swedish Network for European Legal Studies is happy to announce the second volume in this new series of annual publications which acts as a forum for the publication of studies on European law by Swedish scholars. The annual contains peer-reviewed articles aimed at spreading Swedish legal research on European law to a wide international audience. The editors of the yearbook are Professor Per Cramér and Associate Professor Thomas Bull. The articles in the volume are concerned with European law, its development, impact and reform; furthermore they are original, analytical contributions to doctrinal debates and questions, by legal researchers mainly, but not exclusively, connected with the Swedish universities.

This book offers a foreign reader an overview and understanding of the most important aspects of the law and legal system in Sweden, from the legal institutions to more specific topics such as contract law, tort law and family law. These presentations are not exhaustive but rather meant to give the reader a sufficient enough understanding to be somewhat orientated in the Swedish legal system.
