Excerpt from Left Wing Trade Unionism in France: Containing Reflections on the Future of French Trade Unionism It was in this organ, which is worthy of our special esteem, that the five articles which compose this text-book appeared under my initials between 3] st March and 14th July 1917 under the title: Reflections on the Future of Trade Unionism. The first Of these articles bears the date and place at which it was written - Avocourt, 25th February; and the 1ast - Eglingen, 15th June. I remember the nights when I wrote them by the light Of a candle in the front line dug-outs. No isolation or peace could be found elsewhere; in the rest camp there was no way Of keeping to oneself or Of being able to write anything but short notes to one's relatives and friends. It was while my comrades slept and I awaited my turn for guard that I set down these reflections on paper. Originally published in 1991, this book opens with a theoretical and historical section and analyses the affairs of both the communist party and the trade unions of specific European countries. The first part of the book deals with cases of communist strength, where the communist part had close links with a particular trade union (France, Italy, Spain). The second part looks at cases where social democracy dominated the Left (Belgium, The Netherlands and the UK). Two further essays examine developments in the 1980s in Hungary and Poland.

This book, first published in 1983, examines in depth the nature and sources of class radicalism in France and Britain and takes issue with some of the major theories of class consciousness and class action. Drawing on data both from detailed case studies and from wider national surveys, it shows that the conflict of class interests within capitalist societies can lead to sharply diverging attitudes to class inequality. It argues that the explanation of such differences cannot be found in some 'general' law of the evolution of social conflict in capitalist society. It must be sought in the profound institutional differences that exist between the two societies. In particular the study argues for a reassessment of the importance of the experience of war and of the way in which the business and political elite handled the social crises generated by war, in accounting for the long-term structural divergence of capitalist societies.
