Genic constructs. Five articles are devoted to this topic ranging from the B-cell function in transgenic animals to the various effects on diabetes complications. The section on NIDDM, comprising of 10 articles, deals both with new and existing models, their particular widely varying pathogenesis, genetic character istics and complications. The animals reviewed include: spontaneously diabetic OLETF rats, Chinese hamsters, Goto-Kakizaki rats, db/db mice, rhesus monkeys, dogs and an article demonstrating the genetic link between the Zucker fa/fa and corpulent cp/cp obese interstrains. We wish to welcome the new members to our Editorial Board, Dr. Hubert Kolb from Dusseldorf, Dr. Alex Rabinovitch from Edmonton, Dr. Takayoshi Toyota from Sendai and Dr. Soroku Yagihashi from Hirosaki. At the same time we would like to thank Dr. Douglas L. Coleman from Bar Harbor and Dr. George Eisenbarth from Denver for their editorial contribution to the previous LAD Vol umes who have retired from the Editorial Board. With great sadness we have to mention Dr. Otho Michaelis IV from Beltsville, MD who suddenly passed away this year. Otho, or Mike as he was called by friends, made a significant contribution in developing and metabolically defin ing several strains of corpulent cp rats and was extremely helpful in the editor ial work of the LAD series. His contribution will remain in a lasting memory of all researchers of animal diabetes.

An extremely useful text for research Internationally renowned experts describe the models, provide data obtained with those models, and discuss the relative usefulness of models in relation to the diabetic syndrome in humans. The first section examines the most widely used model, the streptozotocin (STZ) rat, condensing a massive quantity of literature to present both the general effects of of STZ diabetes and the effects on individual organ systems. The second section discusses less well-known and more recent diabetic models, such as the BB rat, the NOD mouse and Zucker and Zucker Diabetic Fatty rat models. Genetic models of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) are examined and compared to chemically induced IDDM models.

This edition includes a new eleven-chapter section on hormone action and the regulation of metabolism. The section on definition and pathogenesis now includes chapters on genetics, diabetes in Asia and Africa, and diabetes in U.S. minority groups. Other new chapters cover retinopathy, cardiovascular disease, wound healing, and treatment of women with diabetes. All of the Fourteenth Edition's figures have been completely updated.

Main focus of the new book will be the description and discussion of rat and mouse models for organ transplantation. Various microsurgical techniques will be presented which allow transplantation of functional organs in syngeneic systems. In particular, the extremely difficult methods necessary for organ transplantation in mice will be presented and evaluated. Besides these practical aspects the book will also cover the theoretical sides of organ transplantation like the immunobiology of allotransplantation. Special emphasis will be given to the resurgent field of xenotransplantation. The results from xenograft models developed in the recent years using rats or mice will be reviewed and their impact on future human xenotransplantation will be discussed.
