What can you learn from a mouse? When that mouse has been delighting and entertaining hundreds of millions of people for decades - it turns out there is plenty to learn. Dennis Snow's Lessons From the Mouse provides ten no-nonsense, practical principles that anyone, anywhere can apply. He entertains while he educates with chapters like ''What Time is the 3:00 Parade?' Is Not a Stupid Question.' The mouse is very candid here - no Disney pixie dust blinds the reader. Backstage snafus, onstage errors, and occasional chaos emerge in all their drama, humor, or irony. At its heart, though, Lessons From the Mouse presents ten lessons that guide readers in applying excellence in their own organizations, careers, and lives. Whether being used as a tool for increased organizational effectiveness or a pocket guide for the college grad or new entrepreneur, Lessons From the Mouse offers timeless, straightforward advice.

Genic constructs. Five articles are devoted to this topic ranging from the B-cell function in transgenic animals to the various effects on diabetes complications. The section on NIDDM, comprising of 10 articles, deals both with new and existing models, their particular widely varying pathogenesis, genetic character istics and complications. The animals reviewed include: spontaneously diabetic OLETF rats, Chinese hamsters, Goto-Kakizaki rats, db/db mice, rhesus monkeys, dogs and an article demonstrating the genetic link between the Zucker fa/fa and corpulent cp/cp obese interstrains. We wish to welcome the new members to our Editorial Board, Dr. Hubert Kolb from Dusseldorf, Dr. Alex Rabinovitch from Edmonton, Dr. Takayoshi Toyota from Sendai and Dr. Soroku Yagihashi from Hirosaki. At the same time we would like to thank Dr. Douglas L. Coleman from Bar Harbor and Dr. George Eisenbarth from Denver for their editorial contribution to the previous LAD Vol umes who have retired from the Editorial Board. With great sadness we have to mention Dr. Otho Michaelis IV from Beltsville, MD who suddenly passed away this year. Otho, or Mike as he was called by friends, made a significant contribution in developing and metabolically defin ing several strains of corpulent cp rats and was extremely helpful in the editor ial work of the LAD series. His contribution will remain in a lasting memory of all researchers of animal diabetes.

The sequencing of the mouse genome has placed the mouse front and center as the most important mammalian genetics model. However, no recent volume has detailed the genetic contributions the mouse has made across the spectrum of the life sciences; this book aims to fill that vacuum. Mouse genetics research has made enormous contributions to the understanding of basic genetics, human genetics, and livestock genetics and breeding. The wide-ranging topics in the book include the mouse genome sequencing effort, molecular dissection of quantitative traits, embryo biotechnology, ENU mutagenesis, and genetics of disease resistance, and have been written by experts in their respective fields.

Cigarette smoke exposure is the key initiator of chronic inflammation, alveolar destruction, and the loss of alveolar blood vessels that lead to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is comprised of emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is the major risk factor for non-smokers to develop emphysema. While the first-hand smoke is directly inhaled by smokers, passive smoking occurs when non-smokers are involuntary exposed to environmental tobacco smoke also known as second hand smoke (SHS). SHS is a mixture of 2 forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco: side stream smoke (smoke that comes from the end of a lit cigarette, pipe, or cigar) and mainstream smoke (smoke that is exhaled by a smoker). These two types of smoke have basically the same composition, however in SHS many toxic components are more concentrated than in first-hand smoke, therefore more hazardous for people’s health. Several pathological events have been implicated in the development of SHS-induced COPD, but many aspects of this pathology remain poorly understood halting the development of new advanced treatments for this detrimental disease. In this respect we have welcomed leading investigators in the field to share their research findings and provide their thoughts regarding the mechanisms of the SHS exposure-induced immune responses and inflammatory mechanisms of lung destruction in SHS-induced COPD and related comorbidities.

Popular culture glorified newspapers in the 1970s, creating a kind of mythical community newspaperman--like Keith Blackledge, longtime editor of the North Platte Telegraph. In his editorials and columns, he praised, scolded, cajoled, teased and encouraged readers. He provided a civic connection while also, mostly behind the scenes, working to make the town better. Blackledge's story resonates today because it's also about the evolution of newspapers. The editor's career spanned a time when the industry was hit by a tsunami of change, including shrinking circulations and advertising revenues, as well as new technologies altering forever the way news is produced, delivered and consumed. Author Carol Lomicky chronicles the life of this remarkable newspaperman.
