E. Warren Clark’s 1878 book, Life and Adventure in Japan, is an exquisite portrait of Japan in the 1870s. Japan had just opened itself to the West and had commenced a vigorous program of modernization. Clark, a young American scientist and missionary, worked in Japan for 4 years as a teacher meeting many of Japan’s leaders including the Emperor.
