Literary Translation Research In China

This book provides an overview of the research carried out by Chinese scholars in the field of literary translation. Although literary translation accounts for a small percentage of the translations produced every year, the interest into its cultural and historical significance continues to attract the interest of academics, notably in China. The contributors to the book engage in theoretical discussions, compare source and target texts, discuss the role of patronage and analyze the translation of unique cultural artefacts such as Chinese calligraphy. Their approaches range from the use of corpus-based studies to the use of mixed quantitative and qualitative methods to compare readers’ views. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Linguistics, Literature, Translation Studies, and Cultural Studies. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice.

This book delves into the Chinese literary translation landscape over the last century, spanning critical historical periods such as the Cultural Revolution in the greater China region. Contributors from all around the world approach this theme from various angles, providing an overview of translation phenomena at key historical moments, identifying the trends of translation and publication, uncovering the translation history of important works, elucidating the relationship between translators and other agents, articulating the interaction between texts and readers and disclosing the nature of literary migration from Chinese into English. This volume aims at benefiting both academics of translation studies from a dominantly Anglophone culture and researchers in the greater China region. This book features the latest research on translation by a dozen leading scholars of translation studies in China. The themes discussed are diverse, and include: translation policy, literary translation, medical translation, corpus translation studies, teaching translation, translation technologies, media translation, interpreting studies and so on. The contributors are all respected experts on their respective topics. The book is a collection of the dialogues between Xu Jun, a well-known expert in French literary translation and eminent “Changjiang” scholar in translation studies in China, and some celebrated literary translators in contemporary China, some of whom are also literary scholars, linguists, poets, prose writers, and editors. It is a fundamental achievement of research on the literary translation in the 20th century in China, involving multiple literary types, such as novels, poetry, dramas, prose, and fairy tales; and multiple languages, such as English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and Sanskrit. Those translation experts’ experience and multiple strategies not only play an active role in guiding literary translators in practice but also benefit theoretical development in literary translation. Thus, the book will contribute to worldwide translation studies and get well recognized by translation studies students, teachers, and scholars in the world.

The book is a collection of essays on translating various types of text (literary, religious, political, etc.) into and from Chinese. The focus is on how such translations have been produced and propagated from ancient to modern times, and their sociocultural impact on the evolution of Chinese history and Chinese translatology.

Dreaming across Languages and Cultures: A Study of the Literary Translations of the Hong lou meng (also called The Dream of the Red Chamber, Red Chamber Dream, or The Story of the Stone) is a groundbreaking monograph in translation studies.
