Lived Institutions As History Of Experience

This open access book focuses on institutions that were produced and formed by the emerging welfare state. How were institutions experienced by the people who interacted with them? How did institutions as sites of experience shape and structure people’s everyday lives? Histories of institutions have mainly focused on the structures and power relations produced by institutional settings. Likewise, despite an extensive historiography of the welfare state, reflections on individuals’ experiences of welfare are few. By using ‘lived institutions’ as its conceptual frame, this edited collection merges the fields of institutional studies, the history of the welfare state – and the novel and vibrant field of the history of experience.

In recent decades, historically white institutions have advanced their focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion practices within their organizations. Today, many organizations feature diversity practitioners within their workforce. Despite this, many historically white institutions such as education, business, and healthcare organizations still face systemic racism from within. In the wake of the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism, it is essential for historically white institutions to listen to the experiences of Black women diversity practitioners so that they may implement the necessary changes to promote a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment. This book offers a unique insight into the role of individuals and organisations in shaping institutional arrangements within the context of sport. Institutional approaches can be used to examine the complex relationships between sport organisations and their broader environment and can help explain some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of how sport is organised including why are many sport organisations so similar? Why do they adopt practices that are seemingly irrational? And how can we explain how change occurs within sport organisations? In drawing upon contemporary scholarship and empirical evidence collected by internationally recognized experts within sport, this book provides a contemporary collection of studies that advances the understanding of agency in institutions through sport. 2020 Miriam Matthews Ethnic History Award from the Los Angeles City Historical Society As Southern California was reimagining leisure and positioning it at the center of the American Dream, African American Californians were working to make that leisure an open, inclusive reality. By occupying recreational sites and public spaces, African Americans challenged racial hierarchies and marked a space of Black identity on the regional landscape and social space. In Living the California Dream Alison Rose Jefferson examines how African Americans pioneered America’s “frontier of leisure” by creating communities and business projects in conjunction with their growing population in Southern California during the nation’s Jim Crow era. By presenting stories of Southern California African American oceanfront and inland leisure destinations that flourished from 1910 to the 1960s, Jefferson illustrates how these places helped create leisure production, purposes, and societal encounters. Black communal practices and economic development around leisure helped define the practice and meaning of leisure for the region and the nation, confronted the emergent power politics of recreational space, and set the stage for the sites as places for remembrance of invention and public contest. Living the California Dream presents the overlooked local stories that are foundational to the national narrative of mass movement to open recreational accommodations to all Americans and to the long freedom rights struggle.
