Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. The purpose of this volume is to introduce students to the physical and cultural landscapes of Louisiana. Its focus is on human interactions with the physical environment that people occupy. Louisiana Geography opens with a chapter that introduces the discipline of geography, the importance of the Mississippi River in the development of Louisiana's physical and cultural landscapes, and various geographical foundations such as location, boundaries and parishes. Chapters 2 through 6 considers the natural environment of the state, identifying the processes that have created the landforms, soils, vegetation and climate and their interrelationships. Chapters 7 and 8 turn to the human element - Native American and European settlement patterns and the wide variety of cultural landscapes they created. Chapters 9 and 10 look specifically at the relationship between natural resources and human activities in the state, dealing with the economic geography and the petroleum industry. The final chapter, 11, focuses on population patterns - the trends and issues that confront rural and urban Louisiana. This second edition of Louisiana Geography contains numerous visual features throughout the text that are designed to assist and stimulate students, including numerous maps, diagrams, photographs, and tables.

Louisiana presents an overview of the culture in the New World and Louisiana, including related literature, such as Longfellow's Evangeline. For the visitor, the state is divided into geographic regions such as New Orleans, the plantations, and Lafayette. For each area, tours, historic sites, and restaurants are described. The section on New Orleans celebrates the French Quarter and the local food and music. Outside of New Orleans are majestic plantations and beautiful bayous filled with cypress trees and hanging Spanish moss. Side trips from New Orleans allow visitors to sample some of the various musical tastes of the Bayou State. Zydeco music may be found in Lafayette, while Cajun music may be heard throughout the southern part of the state.
