Lutheran Identity And Political Theology

Lutheran tradition has in various ways influenced attitudes to work, the economy, the state, education, and health care. One reason that Lutheran theology has been interpreted in various ways is that it is always influenced by surrounding social andcultural contexts. In a society where the church has lost a great deal of its cultural impact and authority, and where there is a plurality of religious convictions, the question of Lutheran identity has never been more urgent. However, this question is also raised in the Global South where Lutheran churches need to find their identity in a relationship with several other religions. Here this relationship is developed from a minority perspective. Is it possible to develop a Lutheran political theology that gives adequate contributions to issues concerning social and economic justice? What is the role of women in church and society around the world? Is it possible to interpret Lutheran theology in such a way that it includes liberating perspectives? These are some of the questions and issues discussed in this book.

The concept of "identity" today is contested against the backdrop of myriad forms of social, political, economic and ecological exclusion. How is identity expressed in a global Lutheran tradition whose members share common biblical, liturgical, confessional, theological and spiritual foundations yet represent diverse cultures and traditions? At the end of 2019, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) hosted a global consultation on contemporary Lutheran identities, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The result was the papers presented in this publication. The authors—church leaders, youth, theologians, lay and ordained practitioners in local communities—explore the Spirit's work to revive and equip the faithful for vocation through the ministry of the church today and into the future of the Lutheran communion. Globale Perspektiven lutherischer Identität] Ende 2019 veranstaltete der Lutherische Weltbund (LWB) eine globale Konsultation zu zeitgenössischen lutherischen Identitäten. Die Konsultation in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien, zielte darauf ab herauszufinden, wie die gemeinsamen Noten lutherischer Identität in der reichen Harmonie gelebter, kontextbezogener Identitäten in der gesamten lutherischen Gemeinschaft wiedergegeben werden können. Der LWB engagierte Theologen seiner Mitgliedskirchen, um das Wirken des Heiligen Geistes unter dem Thema "Wir glauben an den Heiligen Geist. Globale Perspektiven lutherischer Identität" zu reflektieren. Dieser Band ist eine Zusammenstellung von Aufsätzen, die bei der Konsultation vorgestellt wurden. Er wird Kirchen, theologischen Institutionen, Pastoren und Laienmitgliedern in der gesamten LWB-Gemeinschaft empfohlen, die die trinitarischen Grundlagen der lutherischen Tradition und die Taufberufung zur Teilnahme an Gottes Mission erforschen möchten.

Since the Reformation in the sixteenth century, Lutheran traditions have impacted culture and politics in many societies. At the same time, Lutheran belief has had an effect on personal faith, morality, and ethics. Modern society, however, is quite different from that at the time of the Reformation. How should we evaluate Lutheran tradition in today's Western multicultural and post-Christian society? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran theological position that can be regarded as reasonable in a society that evidences a considerable weakening of the role of Christianity? What are the challenges raised by cultural diversity for a Lutheran theology and ethics? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran identity in a multicultural society, and isthere any fruitful Lutheran contribution to the coexistence of diff erent religious and non-religious traditions in the future?

Since the Reformation in the sixteenth century, Lutheran traditions have had a great impact on culture and politics in many societies. At the same time Lutheran churches have impacted personal faith, basic morality, and ethics. Modern society, however, is quite different from the time of the Reformation. How should we evaluate Lutheran tradition in today's Western multicultural and post-Christian society? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran theological position that can be regarded as reasonable in a society that evidences a considerable weakening of the role of Christianity? What are the challenges raised by cultural diversity for a Lutheran theology and ethics? Is it possible to develop a Lutheran identity in a multicultural society, and is there any fruitful Lutheran contribution to the coexistence of different religious and nonreligious traditions in the future?

What do we Lutherans believe, and how do our beliefs differ from other Protestant denominations? Many Lutherans do not know how to answer these questions. As generic Protestantism has infiltrated the Lutheran Church, many Lutherans have come to believe false concepts of faith. Some think that it makes no difference whether they are specifically Lutheran versus another Protestant denomination.

This collection brings together lawyers and theologians in the U.S. and Europe to reflect on Lutheran understandings of the political use of the law by secular governments. The book furthers the intellectual conversation about how Lutheran insights can be used to develop jurisprudence and specific solutions to legal issues in which there is strong conflict. It presents the basic theological and interpretive assumptions of the Lutheran tradition as they may inform the creation of legislation and judicial interpretation at local, national and international levels. The authors explore Luther’s conception of the foundations of modern secular law and understanding of vocation. The work discusses the application of Lutheran theological principles to contemporary issues such as the war on terror, native land rights, property law, family law, church and state, medical experimentation, and the criminal law of rape, providing ethical insights for lawyers and lawmakers.
