This book assesses how EU economies have fared in their project of economic and monetary union. Drawing on an entirely new data bank for all fifteen member countries, it takes the Spanish economy as a point of departure to compare their gains and losses. It also considers the implications for the welfare state, enlargement towards Eastern Europe and the political integration of Europe. Combining rigorous analysis and clarity of style, the book is of value to both specialists and the general reader.

Perhaps more than any other European country, Spain has undergone a remarkable transformation in the post-war period. To the surprise of many, it has succeeded in making the leap from a predominantly agricultural and politically repressed country, to a modern European democracy with a diversified economy containing important manufacturing and service sectors. Yet, despite the fact that at the beginning of the twenty-first century Spain is the world's eighth largest economy, old stereotypes that see the Iberian nation as an inflexible, unchanging society, persist. As such, scholars will welcome this new study which challenges the picaresque and outdated notions of Spanish economic development, replacing them with a picture of rapid and profound modernization. Building upon the recent work of historians and economists, the authors provide a thoughtful and compelling overview of the subject that clearly elucidates both the positive and negative aspects of modern Spanish development. Thus, as well as charting the undoubted successes achieved, persistent problems - most notably high unemployment - are also explored. Written in a straightforward and engaging manner, this book engages with research from a wide variety of disciplines, and will be of interest to anyone with a specific interest in modern Spain, or a wider interest in economic development within the framework of the European Union.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This text offers a comprehensive and nuanced view of the economic development of Spain since 1850. It provides a new set of historical GDP estimates for Spain from the demand and supply sides, and presents a reconstruction of production and expenditure series for the century prior to the introduction of modern national accounts. The author splices available national accounts sets over the period 1958–2015 through interpolation, as an alternative to conventional retropolation. The resulting national accounts series are linked to the historical estimates providing yearly series for GDP and its components since 1850. On the basis of new population estimates, the author derives GDP per head, decomposed into labour productivity and the amount of work per person, and placed into international perspective. With theoretical reasoning and historiographical implications, Prados de la Escosura provides a useful methodological reference work for anyone interested in national accounting. Open Access has been made possible thanks to Fundación Rafael del Pino's generous support. Madrid has led Spain’s growth, becoming the third most important economic centre in Europe, behind London and Paris. The Region occupies less than 2% of the national territory, but is home to 14% of the total population, provides 18% of gross domestic product and is the main platform for the accentuated internationalisation of Spain’s economy. Madrid is the country’s leader in terms of employment and its income per inhabitant is more than 30% higher than the average of the 27 States of the European Union. In brief, Madrid’s economy is a strategic and primary component of Spain’s economic structure. These pages offer a comprehensive panorama of the key features of an economy characterised by this strength of leadership, in terms of its growth as well as its support for other regions. With this aim in mind, the book is separated into two complementary parts: the first part includes chapters researched by renowned experts from Spanish universities, who analyse more structural facts and features; and the second part includes chapters written by directors of departments and institutions that are responsible for designing different areas of the Region’s economic policy, presenting the different policies that have been developed by the Region’s administration. Ultimately, these pages have one main objective: to offer a faithful image of a cornerstone of Spain’s economic life, with a remarkable projection of its economy at the international level and a pronounced vocation to be the backbone of the whole country.
