Mama N Em

In writing these story's, I confess my older siblings inspired and convinced me the need for them to be told. The stories are centered, on the life of an extended family revealing the past as it was lived. Their past lives yet undocumented who became freedmen and formed an early base for progress towards a free society of blacks. This family spoke glowingly of their past. They surrendered themselves to the cause in World War One. They gained some resemblance of advancing freedom but more economic advancement in the Roaring twenties that followed. Progress was a struggle. World War Two brought a necessity for all people to be involved. We, Mama N 'Em's continued to struggle for progress, affected by economic conditions, the prejudices of our governing bodies, schooling opportunities or the lack there of, our race conscious leaders and ministers as well as those who opposed our progress. Here are stories of one family who endured those experiences. As the author I have attempted to relate as much of the life and times as possible and being the sixth child of a larger family the stories become more biological yet the lifetime of Mama N 'Em is kept.

Switchin in Da Kitchin with Mama Nem is a collection of selected, tried, and preferred recipes, crafts, cooking measurements, and health and household ideas submitted by over eighty friends, family members, associates, and neighbors plus the golden collection of culinary treasures from Mrs. Idas kitchen. Though this collection includes areas such as Mexico, Cambodia, Bahamas, Australia, Milwaukee, and Georgia, the focus is southern cooking. With the increasing popularity of Mexican dishes, there is a section dedicated to the most favored Mexican meal choices. A very comprehensive kitchen weights and measures chapter is included to make meal preparation quicker and easier. Other features include cooking points; meals just for two; menus and kitchen activities for children; canning, preserving, and pickling instructions; an easy-to-use meal planning chart with proper wine pairing suggestions; health and household tips. For locals and visitors, a section is included, spotlighting three of Richmonds premier southern-cooking restaurants, with a sample menu from each. The last chapter is designed Just for You. This is an area dedicated to your preferred entries. (special recipes, useful crafts, favorite household and health solutions, childrens favorites, etc.).

This book is a collection of colloquialisms that I heard growing up in the 70's and 80's. My mother, grandmother, and aunt worked hard to inspire me to be a confident, kind, and intelligent woman. I think young women could benefit from hearing some of their advice.

This book Momma Nem was created because of the love for cooking that they shared with many. Momma were cooking at an early age. They pass along recipes from family to family via voice. No recipes were ever written down on paper. When you think of Momma Nem instantly you began to smell the aroma of food. Ah where is the smell coming from? I smell fresh collard greens ah it makes me Hungry.

Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.
