Man Time World

The present book is a collection of papers from my life as a philosopher. Besides philosophy, it also covers the topics of logics, physics, cosmology, and theology. In all these fields, it has been my aim to propose new ideas as a solution to old problems. The collection contains papers on issues from the entire European history of ideas, treating philosophical themes of Plato, Augustine, Anselm, Dante, Cusanus, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Borges, together with the logical ideas of Peirce and Prior, the physical ideas of Einstein and Milne, and the crazy hypotheses marring modern cosmology. In order to clear the way for new ideas I have had to chastice cherised positions, espcially that of the current physical establishment which promotes Einsteinian relativity as if his theories were the final scientific answer to all questions concerning the universe. Einstein was a great scientist, no doubt, but today he is exalted as the prophet of our time, whose words are swallowed as the highest wisdom by lay people. Further, the cosmology founded upon his relativity theories are feigned to buttress the stance of the new atheism. It is unbearable that our scientific societies and magazines do not accept ideas which question the currently established scientific paradigm. This is dogmatism at its worst!

It is doubtful whether any other book, outside of the Bible, has been the turning-point in more lives. It has sent thousands of youths, with renewed determination, back to school or college, back to all sorts of vocations which they had abandoned in moments of discouragement. It has kept scores of business men from failure after they had given up all hope. It has helped multitudes of poor boys and girls to pay their way through college who had never thought a liberal education possible. The author has received thousands of letters from people in nearly all parts of the world telling how the book has aroused their ambition, changed their ideals and aims, and has spurred them to the successful undertaking of what they before had thought impossible. The book has been translated into many foreign languages. In Japan and several other countries it is used extensively in the public schools. Distinguished educators in many parts of the world have recommended its use in schools as a civilization-builder.

The fruits of a unique cultural exchange are brought together in this unusual book. Twenty-eight of the most eminent men and women of our generation – philosophers, historians, and scientists from nineteen countries – here discuss what they consider the most vital issues of our day. Paul-Henri Spaak, Barbara Ward, Gunnar Mydral, Linus Pauling, and many others participated in the Noranda lecture series at Expo 67 in Montreal, and each is concerned here with a special aspect of Expo's theme: Man and His World. The approaches to the theme are as varied as the backgrounds of the speakers. Some of the essays give a revealing and optimistic description of the national and international efforts to ensure a future for mankind; others, less optimistic, stress the increasing insanity of the world and draw attention to the poverty, starvation, hatred, waste, and war which destroy what creative men have built. One group of papers deals with the idea of progress. André Leroi Gourhan offers a panoramic description of man's cultural evolution and sketches the vast possibilities of future development; Karl Löwith questions the very notion of progress and observes that much "progressive" development has resulted in nothing but destruction; Félix Houphouët-Boigny, president of the Ivory Coast Republic, describes progress in one section of the world – Africa, and the Ivory Coast in particular. Other lectures deal with such diverse topics as the proper role of government, the modern scientist, formal and informal aspects of education, the history of architecture, recent biological contributions of chemistry, the population explosion, new advances in physics, and the world as a separate entity from man. "The world as universe is not made by man," Professor Löwith reminds us. "It is there, even without us, existing for and by itself." Originally sponsored by Noranda Mines Ltd., the lectures attracted wide attention at the time of their delivery and again later when some of them were broadcast on radio and television.
