Management Of Converged Multimedia Networks And Services

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia and Mobile Networks and Services, MMNS 2008, held on Samos Island, Greece, on September 22-26, 2008, as part of the 4th International Week on Management of Networks and Services, Manweek 2008. The 15 revised full papers and 1 revised short paper presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 46 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on wireless ad hoc and sensor networks; multimedia distribution; quality of experience; and QoS mechanisms and tools for multimedia.

This book focuses largely on enabling technologies for network convergence. A principal aim is to show where parallel functions exist in fixed and mobile voice network architectures and to explain how these functions will be combined. The authors describe the components of a future converged architecture and consider the following key aspects: QoS Requirements, Proposed Solution Architectures, Protocol and Interface options, Underlying Network Issues and Security issues. The book also compares and describes initiatives from several standards bodies working to simplify to a clean architecture and a common set of protocols. The impact on a Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, the preferred method of transport for the core network, will be considered in detail.

The other events co-located with Manweek 2008 were the 19th IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems: Operations and Management (DSOM 2008), the 8th IEEE Workshop on IP Operations and Management (IPOM2008), the Third IEEE International Workshop on Modeling Autonomic CommunicationsEnvironments(MACE2008),the4thIEEE/IFIPInternational Workshop on End-to-End Virtualization and Grid Management (EVGM 2008) andthe5thInternationalWorkshoponNext-GenerationNetworkingMiddleware (NGNM 2008). Under this umbrella, MMNS again proved itself as a top public venue for dissemination of results and intellectual collaboration with speci?c emphasis on the management of emerging mobile and wireless networks. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers and scientists from academia and industry interested in state-of-the-artmanagementof convergedmultimedia networks and services across heterogeneous networking infrastructures.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Teletraffic Congress, ITC 2007, held in Ottawa, Canada, June 2007. Coverage includes IPTV planning and modeling, network performance, traffic engineering, end-to-end delay in converged networks, queuing models, impact of convergence and divergence forces on network performance, traffic management in wireless networks, and network design for capacity and performance.

We are delighted to present the proceedings of the 8th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS 2005). The MMNS 2005 conference was held in Barcelona, Spain on October 24–26, 2005. As in previous years, the conference brought together an international audience of researchers and scientists from industry and academia who are researching and developing state-of-the-art management systems, while creating a public venue for results dissemination and intellectual collaboration. This year marked a challenging chapter in the advancement of management systems for the wider management research community, with the growing complexities of the “so-called” multimedia over Internet, the proliferation of alternative wireless networks (WLL, WiFi and WiMAX) and 3G mobile services, intelligent and high-speed networks scalable multimedia services and the convergence of computing and communications for data, voice and video delivery. Contributions from the research community met this challenge with 65 paper submissions; 33 high-quality papers were subsequently selected to form the MMNS 2005 technical program. The diverse topics in this year’s program included wireless networking technologies, wireless network applications, quality of services, multimedia, Web applications, overlay network management, and bandwidth management.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium, APNOMS 2006. The book presents 50 revised full papers and 25 revised short papers, organized in topical sections on management of ad hoc and sensor networks, network measurements and monitoring, mobility management, QoS management, management architectures and models, security management, E2E QoS and application management, management experience, NGN management, and IP-based network management.
