Joan Jonker, beloved writer of the Molly and Nellie series, weaves her magic in Many a Tear Has to Fall - a heart-warming saga of a family's search for happiness. Perfect for fans of Sheila Newberry and Katie Flynn. Things are finally looking up for George and Ann Richardson. After causing years of worry, their younger daughter Tess, who had always been sickly and small, is starting to blossom into a confident, clever girl. It will be some time before she catches up with her older sister Maddy, but her family know she'll soon be just as strong. And they've just scraped together enough money to take them on their first holiday, to Wales, where the country life will be just what they need. But heartache is waiting for the family when they return to Liverpool, and many a tear will have to fall before they find the true happiness they long for... What readers are saying about Many a Tear Has to Fall: 'Joan Jonker never fails to bring a tear to your eye, a smile to your lips and a jump to your heart. I finished the book in three days and was very sad to finish the book and say "Goodbye" to a very good read. If you want a heart-warming story then this book is a must' 'I loved it, utterly immersed from start to finish, I found myself rooting for each of the main characters and hoping that the book would render them happy (of course it does). The only disappointment I had when it ended was that it had in fact, ended, with no continuing saga'

Short listed for the Best Football Book in the 2010 British Sport Book Awards The way Britain develops its top football talent is a hot topic of debate. The failure of all four of the UK's national teams to reach the 2008 European Championships and the ever-increasing reliance of England's top clubs on foreign talent underlines an undisputable fact: that Britain now lags well behind the world's top countries in producing the best footballers, despite having the wealthiest league in the world and untold riches at the game's disposal. Every Boy's Dream: England's Football Future on the Line investigates why - despite unprecedented expenditure on a huge overhaul of youth development in the past decade - British football continues to fail to nurture top-class football talent. With some 10,000 boys in the system at any time - and less than one per cent of those boys likely to make it as professional footballers - there is a real need for a long, hard look at our domestic football development system. Who funds the system? How are the boys recruited? Who is responsible for their coaching and what qualifications do they have for the job? Who looks after their welfare, ensuring they are enjoying the sport and still keeping up with their schooling while under the clubs' stewardship? What happens when the boys don't make the cut and are released by the clubs? Every Boy's Dream does not pull any punches. It lays the blame at the doors of the authorities in charge of youth football. But, rather than just listing the faults of system - which are many, as the hard-hitting real-life examples demonstrate - it provides tales of inspiration and a blueprint for the future of the national game. It is the most thorough book ever written about football youth development, and cracks through the age-old veneer of perceived wisdom that has stifled debate on the subject.

I often cry when I read parts of my book. Sometimes it was so difficult and I loved the kids so much. This is far from a “How To” book. I had no qualifications in child raising. I just wanted single parents to know that they are not alone, and to offer lots of encouragement and love. Raising well loved, healthy children is a great challenge for even two parents who are strong and love each other. Raising children as a single parent can be an overwhelming task. I felt compelled to write this book to tell you that you can do it. I made many mistakes, but somewhere, somehow something worked, and I have two wonderful kids who make me proud to be their mother. We had very little money, but we had so much love. Together we made it happen. We grew together, we worked together, we snuggled and read for hours together. Raising kids is like planting a garden. We sow the seeds and we water with lots of love. One day we reap what we have sown and we are blessed to see the wonderful adults our children have become. I wrote this book to encourage you to be not weary in well doing. Do not despair. Love your children and create a loving environment. Do not hesitate to put your dreams aside temporarily. Your time will come and it will be special because your own child may be your best support and encouragement.

This volume provides a new kind of contrastive analysis of two unrelated languages — English and Hebrew — based on the semiotic concepts of invariance, markedness and distinctive feature theory. It concentrates on linguistic forms and constructions which are remarkably different in each language despite the fact that they share the same familiar classifications and labels. Tobin demonstrates how and why traditional and modern syntactic categories such as grammatical number; verb tense, aspect, mood and voice; conditionals and interrogatives; etc., are not equivalent across languages. It is argued that these so-called universal concepts function differently in each language system because they belong to distinct language-specific semantic domains which are marked by different sets of semantic features. The data used in this volume have been taken from a wide range of both spoken and written discourse and texts reflecting people's actual use of language presented in their relevant linguistic and situational contexts.

Best known for her long-running comic strip Ernie Pook's Comeek, illustrated fiction (Cruddy, The Good Times Are Killing Me), and graphic novels (One! Hundred! Demons!), the art of Lynda Barry (b. 1956) has branched out to incorporate plays, paintings, radio commentary, and lectures. With a combination of simple, raw drawings and mature, eloquent text, Barry's oeuvre blurs the boundaries between fiction and memoir, comics and literary fiction, and fantasy and reality. Her recent volumes What It Is (2008) and Picture This (2010) fuse autobiography, teaching guide, sketchbook, and cartooning into coherent visions. In Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass, author Susan E. Kirtley examines the artist's career and contributions to the field of comic art and beyond. The study specifically concentrates on Barry's recurring focus on figures of young girls, in a variety of mediums and genres. Barry follows the image of the girl through several lenses—from text-based novels to the hybrid blending of text and image in comic art, to art shows and coloring books. In tracing Barry's aesthetic and intellectual development, Kirtley reveals Barry's work to be groundbreaking in its understanding of femininity and feminism.

Ten-year-old Benjamin Kritzer is back. Having survived his Martian parents (thus far), having survived a broken heart (when the nine-year-old love of his life, Susan Pomeroy, moved to Canada), and having survived the Bad Men, Benjamin has a whole new slew of adventures to deal with in Kritzerland. They include the horrifying prospect of going to junior high school (and the more-horrifying prospect of having to wear a jockstrap in Gym class), visiting the new amusement park, Pacific Ocean Park, where he finally gets to visit his parents' home planet on the Flight to Mars ride, meeting The Three Stooges, visiting a movie set at Paramount Studios, going to St. Louis, dealing with his psychotic brother and "What is it, fish?" grandfather, and, most importantly, meeting his first real friend, Paul Daley. The story of that close and endearing friendship is hilarious and touching, and the portrait of growing up in the magical city that was Los Angeles in the late 1950s is vivid and razor-sharp, and will make you feel like you've taken a time machine back to another wonderful, more innocent era.
