Market Street forms the vertebrae of San Francisco. First surveyed in 1847 by Jasper O’Farrell, the boulevard was laid out to provide a transition between two opposing grids. Intended to become the city’s main and widest thoroughfare, it rapidly became the busiest. In the mid 19th century, San Francisco was regarded as the most developed western American outpost of urbanity, sophistication and refinement. By the conclusion of the century, its reputation rivaled many East Coast cities. Market Street became the base for cable car and horse car lines providing service along the local commercial corridor and connections to distant transfer destinations. The 1906 catastrophic San Francisco Earthquake and Fire briefly halted development. During the reconstruction, the Market Street cable car lines would be entirely removed and replaced by electric streetcars. Automobiles would replace streetcars. During the 1970s, the introduction of the subterranean Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) alleviated some of the traffic congestion. This edition is an architectural survey of Market Street’s historical and contemporary buildings accompanied by historical profiles. The narrative begins from the Embarcadero until the Tenderloin district. From Anita Hughes, author of Monarch Beach, comes Market Street, a delicious story of a department store heiress, her messy marriage, and her passion for food Cassie Blake seems to lead a charmed life as the heiress to Fenton's, San Francisco's most exclusive department store. But when she discovers her husband, Aidan, a handsome UC Berkeley professor, has had an affair with a student, she flees to the comfort of her best friend Alexis's Presidio Heights mansion, where she wonders if she should give their marriage one more chance. Whether or not she can forgive Aidan is not the only choice Cassie has to make. Cassie's mother is eager to have her oversee the opening of Fenton's new Food Emporium, which Fenton's hopes will become San Francisco's hottest gourmet shopping destination. Cassie's true passion has always been food, not fashion, and Cassie suspects her mother might be trying to lure her into the Fenton's fold by entrusting her with such an exciting opportunity. The Market Street Railway Company thrived in an age when rails ruled San Francisco. Spanning the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and the boom times of World War II, it had a long and legendary lifetime that is deeply ingrained in the city's early identity. Gradually, however, it became challenged by the emergence of the automobile, cheaper motor coaches, and "nickel jitneys"--competing cars on the same routes. The MSRy painted the fronts of its cars white to show up well in San Francisco's misty weather, and for many years people called them "the White Front cars." Franchise competition and city regulations undid MSRy, and its assets were absorbed into MUNI in 1944. However, the name lives on as the nonprofit Market Street Railway organization, dedicated to preserving the history of this company and also to retrofitting early streetcars from across the globe, putting them back in service on Market Street.

In 1903 the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company broke ground on an ambitious project, to create the City of Brotherly Love's first high speed rail system. When it opened on March 4, 1907, the Market Street Subway-Elevated Line was greeted with acclaim. Running from the suburbs of West Philadelphia on elevated tracks, trains ducked underground to reach the city center. The line would be joined by the Frankford Elevated in 1922, and merged into today's Market-Frankford Line, now operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Originally printed in 1907 to celebrate the opening of the subway line, Philadelphia's Rapid Transit include descriptive text, and dozens of rare photos showing the men who built the line. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the construction and design of one of the nation's earliest municipal railway systems. This reprint has been slightly reformatted, but care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
