Mathematics For Human Flourishing In The Time Of Covid 19 And Post Covid 19

The International Chair in Mathematical Physics and Applications (ICMPA - UNESCO chair), University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin, and the Center for Applied Mathematics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Niš, CAM-FMEN, organized a webinar on Mathematics for human flourishing in the time of COVID-19 and post COVID-19, 21 October 2020, supported by the City of Niš. The objectives of the webinar were to give precise information about the work that scientists do to cure the disease, to push forward technology, to understand our society and create new expressions of humanity, and to question the role of mathematics in the responses to this pandemic.

This book gathers invited, peer-reviewed works presented at the 2021 edition of the Classical and Constructive Nonassociative Algebraic Structures: Foundations and Applications—CaCNAS: FA 2021, virtually held from June 30 to July 2, 2021, in dedication to the memory of Professor Nebojša Stevanović (1962-2009). The papers cover new trends in the field, focusing on the growing development of applications in other disciplines. These aspects interplay in the same cadence, promoting interactions between theory and applications, and between nonassociative algebraic structures and various fields in pure and applied mathematics. In this volume, the reader will find novel studies on topics such as left almost algebras, logical algebras, groupoids and their generalizations, algebraic geometry and its relations with quiver algebras, enumerative combinatorics, representation theory, fuzzy logic and foundation theory, fuzzy algebraic structures, group amalgams, computer-aided development and transformation of the theory of nonassociative algebraic structures, and applications within natural sciences and engineering. Researchers and graduate students in algebraic structures and their applications can hugely benefit from this book, which can also interest any researcher exploring multi-disciplinarity and complexity in the scientific realm.

The title of this book, Math in the Time of Corona, has been drawn from the highly acclaimed novel by Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera. The volume editor, Alice Wonders, holds a fictitious name that represents the mathematics publishing group at Springer Nature. Undeterred by disasters, so many mathematical and scientific discoveries have been made during times of duress or confinement. Unlike most any other subject, mathematics may be researched from anywhere. Covid-19, like Cholera, implementation of vaccinations have been uneven throughout the globe since the beginning of 2021. However, there has been a renewed hope for a return to normalcy though the timing will no doubt vary worldwide. Essays in this volume vary in topic and are written by members of the greater mathematics community, hence the use of “Math” in the book title. They recount or describe significant or noteworthy discoveries, musings, award winnings, eureka moments, challenges, solutions, inspirations, etc. that have resulted from, or have occurred during, an unprecedented global pandemic. Several of the authors have been involved in starting new research and devising new methodologies related to society’s response to the outbreak and its ability to self-organize during a dramatic and complex situation. Some contributions describe how mathematical models and the management of big data have proved to be fundamental tools for the interpretation of epidemic activity and development of coping mechanisms.

Infectious diseases are leading threats and are of highest risk to the human population globally. Over the last two years, we saw the transmission of Covid-19. Millions of people died or were forced to live with a disability. Mathematical models are effective tools that enable analysis of relevant information, simulate the related process and evaluate beneficial results. They can help to make rational decisions to lead toward a healthy society. Formulation of mathematical models for a pollution-free environment is also very important for society. To determine the system which can be modelled, we need to formulate the basic context of the model underlying some necessary assumptions. This describes our beliefs in terms of the mathematical language of how the world functions. This book addresses issues during the Covid phase and post-Covid phase. It analyzes transmission, impact of coinfections, and vaccination as a control or to decrease the intensity of infection. It also talks about the violence and unemployment problems occurring during the post-Covid period. This book will help societal stakeholders to resume normality slowly and steadily.

This book describes various mathematical models that can be used to better understand the spread of novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and help to fight against various challenges that have been developed due to COVID-19. The book presents a statistical analysis of the data related to the COVID-19 outbreak, especially the infection speed, death and fatality rates in major countries and some states of India like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Each chapter with distinctive mathematical model also has numerical results to support the efficacy of these models. Each model described in this book provides its unique prediction policy to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This book is focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on different sectors, i.e., education, real estate, health, and agriculture. The lockdown has been announced to control the spread of COVID-19 infections, however people/industries/organizations were not ready for lockdown and it has greatly affected their growth. The front workers in the healthcare sector suffered a lot as major responsibilities they needed to carry on. The education sector is also hampered due to the pandemic as schools, colleges were closed and teaching, examinations were carried out on online platforms. These platforms were new to teachers as well as students. The real estate sector faced tremendous loss in this pandemic as people were scared and no one ready to invest their money in such an uncertain time. The agriculture filed is also suffered as raw materials required for agriculture were not available readily due to pandemic. This book presents a survey that is conducted to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of work-life in various sectors. The survey is focused majorly on four sectors, i.e. education, healthcare, real estate and agriculture. Data analysis is done based on responses of survey and mathematical modeling is provided for each case study.

The book considers how identities have become more fractured since COVID-19, by thinking of COVID-19 in relation to other crises (economic, social, digital, and ecological) and by drawing parallels to literature, cinema, and visual art. COVID-19 was a type of apocalypse, a catastrophic destructive event that produced dystopian measures in its wake and drew uncanny parallels to dystopic works of literature and speculative fiction. Yet the pandemic was apocalyptic in another sense too. The word apocalypse derives from apokalupsis, which means disclosure or uncovering. In this way, COVID-19 also revealed the dystopian processes already at work in the world, including digital forms of surveillance as well as the asymmetries within populations and divides in health outcomes between the Global North and Global South. Indeed, societies that have experienced the horrors of settler colonialism have already survived apocalypses. COVID-19 serves then as a premonition for our climate emergency as well as an echo of other apocalyptic situations, both real and imagined. This book consists of essays from acclaimed theorists and scholars writing amid the pandemic and exposes the asymmetries of our divided world. The volume will be indispensable for scholars and researchers of literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature including post-apocalyptic and speculative fiction.
