Excerpt from Memories of Familiar Books The publication of old books under new names is said to be a growing evil in the book trade. The publishers, therefore, think it right to explain the change of title under which a new edition of Mr. Reed's delightful Essays is offered to the public. Before these were collected and issued by the present publishers - indeed, while they were in course of publication in the World - a great publishing house issued a volume of Essays, by an author of high repute, bearing the same title. Mr. Reed's publishers anticipated and advised him of the probable result of using for his book the title he had selected and used in the columns of the World. But he had learned to love the words "Among My Books," justly thought them most appropriate to his work, and, believing himself their proper owner, held firmly to his own, yielding only to a suggestion to use the words "World Essays" as an outer title, in the hope of avoiding confusion. The result was as the publishers anticipated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memories of by-Gone Days When my husband asked me to write the foreword to this little book I was glad, for no one except the author can feel so great an interest in this as I do. His articles and pictures for the outdoor magazines have been a pleasure to both of us, and it has long been my desire to see them gathered into a volume in permanent form. In Memories of Bygone Days there is no morbid tendency to disparage present joys, but simply a wholesome retrospect. Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain Our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain. We may make of memory a blessing or a curse, just as we will. It is a stupendous thought that we are augmenting or decreasing future pleasure by the way we spend today. The only use we have for our past is to get a future out of it. All the pleasures of today One by one soon glide away To the golden shore of sweet long ago. Happy is that man whose memories are pleasant and profitable company. Alice kimball steele. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Memories of the Months: Second Series IT is probably a mere philological accident, devoid of moral significance, that, in the whole of the English version of the Old and New Testaments, there is not a single instance of the use of the substantives enjoy ment' and 'happiness.' Frequent mention of 'joy' and 'pleasure, ' but the first seems to verge too closely upon the boisterous, or at least the exuberant, and the other to have become tainted too grossly in human handling to express precisely the sensation stirred by weather fair or foul, by noble landscape, by the every day operations of nature, and by communion, oral or literary, with higher intellects than our own. One derives pleasure from, and feels joy in, all such things, but they inspire something incapable of interpretation by either of these terms; something which the French denote by bonhewr, and we, in defiance of obvious etymology, by 'happiness.' Excerpt from "Virginibus Puerisque" And Other Papers; Memories and Portraits; Familiar Studies of Men and Books We are all busy in this world building Towers of Babel; and the child of our imaginations is always a Changeling when it comes from nurse. This is not only true in the greatest, as of wars and folios, but in the least also, like the trifling volume in your hand. Thus I began to write these papers with a defi nite end: I was to be the Advocatus, not I hope Diaboli, but Juventutis, ' I was to state temperately the beliefs of youth as Opposed to the contentions of age; to go over all the field where the two differ, and produce at last a little volume of special pleadings, which I might call, without misnomer, Life at Twenty five. But times kept changing, and I shared in the change. I clung hard to that entrancing age; but, with the best will, no man can be twenty-five forever. The old, ruddy convictions deserted me, and, along with them, the style that fits their presentation and defence. I saw, and indeed my friends in formed me, that the game was up. A good part Of the volume would answer to the long-projected title; but the shadows Of the prison-house are on the rest. The Book of Memory is a magisterial and beautifully illustrated account of the workings and function of memory in medieval society. Memory was the psychological faculty valued above all others in the period stretching from late antiquity through the Renaissance. The prominence given to memory has profound implications for the contemporary understanding of all creative activity, and the social role of literature and art. Drawing on a range of fascinating examples from Dante, Chaucer, and Aquinas to the symbolism of illuminated manuscripts, this unusually wide-ranging book offers new insights into the medieval world.
