Mevlana Rumi

Most, if not all, of the popularly read versions of Rumi are not direct translations - they are translations of translations. Dr. Nevit Ergin is a scholar specializing in Sufic literature and Rumi, and is fluent in Rumi’s original language of Farsi, or Persian as it is also known. In Crazy As We Are he presents 128 previously untranslated quatrains direct from the Farsi. Dr. Nevit Ergin is a retired surgeon who practiced for more than thirty years. He has been a student of Sufism for more than fifty years, and has published sixteen volumes of Rumi's Divan-i-Kebir. He lives in San Mateo, California.

Jalaloddin Rumi was a poet and a mystic, but he was first a teacher; in these verses he draws the reader into the complexities of human love and separation and explains the path to divine love through the elimination of self-regard and worldly desires. Drawing on diverse sources from bawdy tales and fables to stories of the prophet Mohammed, these verses are brief in expression yet copious in meaning.

This work attempts to present Rumi to the English-speaking world and to shed light on his life as seen from within the Islamic mystical tradition. The knowledge presented in this work comes from Sefik Can, a great expert of Rumi and who used to be the highest authority, Sertariq, of the Mevlevi Sufi order in Turkey until he passed away on January 24, 2005. Two aspects of this work make it unique. The first is that the book was originally authored by a man who is ninety five years old and who has dedicated his entire life to the teachings of Rumu. Such a Mevlevi's view of Rumi makes this work greatly valuable. The second important contribution to the book is the foreword, which was translated by from the original turkish, written by M. Fethullah Gulen, a prominent Muslim thinker and interfaith activist of Turkey.
