Microsurgical Orthopedics

Microsurgical techniques are widely used in the field of orthopaedics. This book addresses all aspects of orthopaedic microsurgery, from development of the principles to their applications. Replantation of fingers, hands and extremity parts are well summarized by highly experienced microsurgical surgeons. The methods for tissue transplantation and microsurgical reconstruction of tissue defects, which have been proved to be successful tools for saving severely injured extremities, were developed by experienced orthopaedic surgeons in cooperation with plastic surgeons. Injuries to peripheral nerves and the brachial plexus are also discussed extensively in this monograph. All illustrations and tables were meticulously selected and are easy to understand. The book was written for all microsurgeons who work in the fields of orthopaedics, plastic and hand surgery. The importance of microsurgery in orthopaedic surgery is expected to increase rapidly. This volume is therefore a valuable reference for practising junior as well as senior orthopaedic surgeons. On April 23, 1906, Alexis Carrel presented his manuscript entitled "The Surgery of Blood Vessels" to the Johns Hopkins Medical Society. His work on the tech nique of small vessel anastomosis and the transplantation of visceral organs earned him the Nobel Prize in 1912. The use of magnification in operative surgery began in 1921 with the work of Nylen, who first employed the microscope for reconstructive procedures in the middle ear. Jacobson and Suarez published their initial observa tions on the use of microsurgery for the anastomosis of small vessels in 1960, and two years later, Malt reported the historic replantation of an upper extremity. To surgeons involved in reconstruction of the extremities, the evolution of micro surgery has provided the most significant advances of the past three decades. The dramatic clinical successes of replantation surgery and free tissue transfer have substantially improved functional and cosmetic results in addition to decreas ing morbidity in patients who present with complex reconstructive problems. This book aims to introduce the most recent microsurgical techniques and applications in the pattern of illustrative case presentations, including digit replantation, toe-to-hand transplantation, peripheral nerve injuries especially total brachial plexus avulsion injury, surgical flaps. Microsurgery appeared to be a great procedure suitable for more applications. Anatomic research of the blood supply of skin, fascia, nerve, muscle, and bone identified flaps could be carried by pedicle vessels.
