Mid Term Evaluation Of Securing Biodiversity Conservation And Sustainable Use In Huangshan Municipality

The project's specific objective is to “evaluate, adapt, and implement relevant best practices derived from the successful management of Huangshan National Scenic Reserve to strengthen and upgrade the existing municipal system of protected areas (PAs).” This is to be achieved by adopting a tiered, sequential approach applied to different classes of Nature Reserves (NR) grouped to best benefit from project-supported activities in a cost-effective manner. This MTE is being conducted for the purposes of both accountability and learning of GEF, GCU, FAO, and other participating institutions. This MTE documents important lessons to guide the remaining phase of the project and will serve as an input to improve its implementation. Likewise, it will present strategic recommendations in order to ensure that all the planned results of the project will be achieved if considered realistic. The Resources, Partnerships, Impact – 2020 report elucidates who FAO is, what it has done, and how it has worked in collaboration with multiple stakeholders in 2019. Also, it highlights the way FAO has been adapting to changes in the development aid landscape, specifically by leveraging different kinds of funds and seeking innovative partnerships, in order to accelerate the attainment of the SDGs. The report takes a closer look at the challenges and strategies that guided FAO’s activities at the regional and global levels in 2019, while showcasing selected interventions that delivered critical results on the ground.

This publication presents the findings of the terminal evaluation of the project ‘Securing biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in China’s Dongting Lake Protected Areas’ implemented in China’s Hunan Province. The project was designed to address key barriers to biodiversity conservation. The conclusions highlighted the overall relevance of project design, contribution to biodiversity conservation and strengthening of institutions and networks and the adequate role played by the executing and implementing agencies. Nevertheless, a strong sustainability plan managing existing risks is needed to reinforce sustainability prospects further and certain delays were noted during project implementation that contributed to inefficiencies. Key recommendations made were on the sustainability plan that required finalization and addressing potential risks to long-term impact, the need for the social impact of biodiversity conservation efforts to be fully considered and systematically recorded and that the future project designs should be updated with operational partners to address any contextual changes.

Building water-wise cities is a pressing need nowadays in both developed and developing countries. This is mainly due to the limitation of the available water resources and aging infrastructure to meet the needs of adapting to social and environmental changes and for urban liveability. This is the first book to provide comprehensive insights into theoretical, systematic, and engineering aspects of water-wise cities with a broad coverage of global issues. The book aims to (1) provide a theoretical framework of water-wise cities and associated sustainable water systems including key concepts and principles, (2) provide a brand-new thinking on the design and management of sustainable urban water systems of various scales towards a paradigm shift under the resource and environmental constraints, and (3) provide a technological perspective with successful case studies of technology selection, integration, and optimization on the “fit-for-purpose” basis.
