Motherhood is often portrayed as one of the most fulfilling experiences in a woman's life. Books on pregnancy, birth and motherhood not only tell women what they should do, they also encourage them to have high expectations of what is inevitably a 'journey into the unknown'. Missing Voices isdifferent: its authors offer no prescriptions. Instead they tell the stories of 800 recent mothers. School reform of one kind or another is a priority for education systems the world over. College Voices tells the story of Christ’s College Aberdeen, a theological college of the Church of Scotland, from its beginnings in the 1840s to the present day. This is a rich and colourful story, vividly told, and peopled with many fascinating characters and stories. Hundreds of young men, and later women, have passed through the doors seeking to meet the demands of the College and authorities to become ministers for the Free Church, the United Free Church and, since 1929, for the Church of Scotland. Written by the College’s administrator, who saw how the personalities of teachers and students alike shone through the formal language of minute books and other records, College Voices relates how the College grew and evolved alongside the history not only of Scotland but of the world. It demonstrates the effects on ministerial training of two world wars, and is honest about times when the College was threatened by closure and scandal.

For many African Americans who grew up in the pre-civil rights era, the segregated community was usually referred to as a village. This was the origination of the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child." The voices that came out of the village were voices that are now becoming diminished. These voices helped to keep the culture intact. The voices from the elderly, the parents, the church, and the community-provided discipline, hope, pride, and integrity for the inhabitants. Many may feel that some of the messages were crude or inappropriate, but we have to take into account the lack of educational opportunities during this time. This book attempts to capture the messages that we need to not only remember, but respect. These voices helped us to survive racism and discrimination. The voices of the village are still relevant today and should not be forgotten.
