The Rengadesi family are the sixth main crime family in the city of New York, in the latter years of the twentieth century. The Rengadesi don't play by the rules. They tread on the Rambino (a family member of the New York Crime Commission) too many times and the Godfather of the Rambino crew wants to wipe them out. Caesar Rengadesi's youngest son is murdered by the Rambinos and Caesar's guardian angel advises him to move his family back to their birthplace in Rome, Italy. But not before Caesar arranges for five Bullets to be planted in the head of the New York police chief. All hell breaks loose in New York and on arrival in Rome Caesar's reluctance to get involved with the Roman godfather Julius and his family proves problematic. When Caesar's family become embroiled with the Julius family, Caesar finally has to get involved and by the end of these tales all except one from the Rengadesi and Julius families are on their way to the moon.

We see mafias as vast, powerful organizations, harvesting billions of dollars across the globe and wrapping their tentacles around everything from governance to finance. But is this the truth? Traveling from mafia initiation ceremonies in far-flung Russian cities to elite gambling clubs in downtown Macau, Federico Varese sets off in search of answers. Using wiretapped conversations, interviews, and previously unpublished police records, he builds up a picture of the real men and women caught up in mafia life, showing their loves and fears, ambitions and disappointments, as well as their crimes. Mafia Life takes us into the real world of organized crime, where henchmen worry about bad managers and have high blood pressure, assassinations are bungled as often as they come off, and increasing pressure from law enforcement means that a life of crime is no longer lived in the lap of luxury. As our world changes, so must mafias. Globalization, migration, and technology are disrupting their traditions and threatening their revenue streams, and the Mafiosi must evolve or die. Mafia Life is an intense and totally compelling look at these organizations and the daily life of their members, as they get to grips with the modern world.

Herbert Asbury presents here a vivid and startling account of New York gangdom from its beginning in Revolutionary times to comparatively recent days. Here are the stories of the great gangs which terrorized the city and at times menaced its very existence—from the Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits to the Gophers and the Eastmans. Kid Dropper, Dopey Benny, Gyp the Blood and Owney Madden are a few of the gangster luminaries described, not to mention such female evildoers as Gallus Mag and Sadie the Goat. Nor have the underworld’s lesser lights been overlooked; for these pages are crowded with a host of gang warriors, pickpockets, tong leaders, murderers, politicians, gamblers, prostitutes, dive-keepers and a few would-be reformers. Mr. Asbury has created such a rich, factual background for this chronicle of crime and gangsterism that the book gains considerable stature as a revealing picture of New York City’s history through a century of frenzied growth and expansion. Whether you read it as such or merely for amusement, it is a swift, exciting experience.

“It pours out spicy tales of Mob lore to make its management points, an approach most execs couldn’t refuse.” —New York Post Former mobster Louis Ferrante reveals the surprisingly effective management techniques of organized crime and explains how to apply them in any legitimate business. As an associate of the Gambino Family, he was part of some of the biggest heists in mob history. His talent for management led bosses like John Gotti to rely on him. Now he offers time-tested Mafia wisdom based on true stories, such as: • Three can keep a secret (if two are dead): Build trust with your colleagues. • You don’t always need a gun to hit a target: Lead people without force. • It’s never personal: When circumstances demand it, never hesitate to pull the trigger.
