Electromagnetism refers to the force of electric and magnetic fields which is frequently used in various technologies. Electromagnetic technologies are also used in medical imaging and diagnostics. The advancements in electromagnetic engineering such as computational methods, imaging theory and algorithms, measurement techniques, etc. have led to the development of this technology. Such advancements have led to development of low-cost, portable, and accurate microwave sensing/imaging systems which can help in overcoming various challenges existing in medical diagnostics. Currently, the electromagnetism research is focused on the use of microwave technologies in medical imaging and diagnostics. Microwave medical imaging makes use of the prominent dielectric contrast between healthy and disease-affected tissues to detect a pathological condition. The objective of microwave sensing technology is to monitor physiological parameters such as heart-rate, or disease-related biomarkers in the blood. A new medical application named microwave tomography is emerging as an effective means to monitor thermal ablation. In this book, various advancements in electromagnetic technology having applications in medical diagnostics have been looked at in detail. Medical researchers, scientists and students actively engaged in this field will find it full of crucial and unexplored concepts.

This timely book presents innovative technologies for use in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of brain disease. These technologies offer exciting possibilities in the medical field owing to their low-cost, portability and safety. The authors address cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke, ischemia, haemorrhage, and vasospasm, these diseases having an ever-increasing societal relevance due to the global ageing population. The authors describe the potential of novel techniques such as microwave imaging and present innovative modalities for treatment of brain tumours using electromagnetic fields and nano-composites, as well as for monitoring brain temperature during surgery. Finally, Emerging Electromagnetic Technologies for Brain Diseases Diagnostics, Monitoring and Therapy addresses the perspectives which arise from multi-modal multi-spectral EM modalities, which make a synergic use of the different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. This text will be of interest to readers from various different areas, given the fundamental interdisciplinarity of the subject matter. This includes researchers or practitioners in the field of electrical engineering, applied physicists, and applied mathematicians working on imaging applications for biomedical and electromagnetic technologies. Neurologists and radiologists may also find this book of interest, as may graduate students in these areas.

This book is a comprehensive guide to the application of recently introduced and emerging technologies in minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). These technologies, including 2D and 3D navigation, endoscopy, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, and 3D printing, are helping to overcome previous limitations of MISS, such as the steep learning curve and the need for a great deal of experience in order to achieve optimal outcomes. Compared with traditional techniques, their use is designed to reduce local operative tissue damage, alleviate systemic surgical stress, and enable earlier return to function. The book provides detailed and extensively illustrated accounts of the role of the new technologies and techniques in a wide range of indications. In essence, all spine conditions, whether degenerative, traumatic, or oncologic, will in the near future be amenable to MISS using these approaches. The book will be a source of insight and practical assistance for all surgeons who perform MISS, regardless of their level of experience.
