Excerpt from Modern Italian Literature BY the end of the sixteenth century the great literary and artistic movement of the Renaissance had spent itself in Italy, and with it the interest of the few people who still care for Italian literature in this country usually comes to an abrupt end. But if Agamemnon was not the first of the world's heroes, neither Dante, nor even Tasso, was the last of Italy's poets. It is true that she ceased to lead the way in literature. Her best energies were absorbed in other directions. But during the eighteenth century there was a steady revival. Literature became more and more modern and drew closer and closer to life as national feeling developed. This was thoroughly awakened by the French Revolution and finally took definite shape with the restoration of Bourbon and Austrian rule in the peninsula. From that time national unity and independence became the ideal of all that was best in the country, and the artists and men of letters were among the most enthusiastic supporters of the cause. Hitherto the literary revival, which went hand in hand with the national revival, has had no share in the interest that the romantic story of the Risorgimento has recently aroused in England. Excerpt from A Manual of Italian Literature Indeed, it is scarcely far-fetched to say tha Greece was avenged for her slavery by the not less complete slavery of Rome to her intellectual supremacy. The Roman poets, dazzled by the brilliancy of their Athenian prototypes, fancied that only by imitating, could they hope to excel. A more unfortunate idea never took possession of a nation. It destroyed everything in their writings that was spontaneous and redolent of their native soil. Whatever is really endowed with life and intrinsic value in their works, has had to struggle into existence through the suffocating atmosphere of foreign fashions and foreign trains of thought. This evil was apparent in other branches of litera ture, but it was very far from injuring them as it injured poetry. Virgil was assuredly one of the greatest poets that ever lived, and yet how much of his poetry is second-hand, or, at best, adapted from others. The adaptations are Often executed with marvellous skill, but this fact only enhances our regret that he should have made Of his Eneid but an echo of Homer; and of his Eclogms but a repetition of Theocritus. His Georgia, indeed, escaped being only a decoction from Greek herbs, because in them he wrote of what he had actually seen and experienced, and they are, in truth, his masterpiece. Excerpt from History of Modern Italian Art IN writing this book I trust that I have not taken a wholly one-sided view of my subject. I certainly have not been conscious of any wish either to de monstrate that the art-work of the period under con sideration was wholly good or that it was wholly bad. At the beginning I shared the feeling which we all have to some extent, that modern Italian art was degenerate, far removed in its standards and in its results from the art of the best period; but much study of the subject has led me to alter that view very materially.
