Excerpt from Modern Propagation of Tree Fruits IN preparing this little book three important factors were kept in mind. First, only to include those practices of propagation which are in general use and which are accepted by the orchardist and the commercial nursery man as being the most important. Second, to furnish in a condensed form such information on propagation as will enable the general fruit grower to follow out the practices. It is assumed that the average fruit grower has a general knowledge of the various methods of propagation, hence the many confusing details are here omitted. Third, an attempt is made to follow rather closely the methods employed by the arger commercial nurseries and to contrast these with the similar Operations of the orchard ists. The fruit grower who buys his nursery stock desires to know something of the methods whereby it is produced. The student of Horticulture needs a general knowledge of nursery work and how to apply it to either commercial or home use. It is hoped that the work is sufficiently clear that any interested fruit grower can successfully produce his own trees, thereby creating a desire to know more and to do greater things. Excerpt from Propagation of Deciduous Fruits The question most frequently asked is, ' Why not grow all fruits and shrubs from seeds? The answer is that where improvements have been made these qualities are not transmitted through the seed but are perpetuated through the buds. Hence the necessity of using parts of the plant itself by budding, grafting, and layering. If we merely desire a peach or plum tree without regard to the variety, seeds may be used. Occasionally a variety will come true to type from the seed as does the old Heath Cling peach, but such cases are rare. In propagating fruits, therefore, seeds are used only for grow ing stock plants on which to bud or graft varieties. This is true for most tree fruits. Some stocks are profitably grown from cuttings, such as quinces, roses, grapes, and certain types of plums. The question of what kind of stocks to use even for the common deciduous fruits is a long story in itself - much too long to be narrated here with any degree of completeness. The following summary must suffice: Apple - Stocks for apples may be grown from the seeds of any variety of apple. As there is no commercial source of supply in this country aside from very limited quantities from old seedling orchards in New England referred to as Vermont crab, nurserymen procure their seeds from France and Austria. These are native seedlings known to the trade as French crab. Stock for dwarf apples consists of stool or mound layers from the Paradise apple, a natural dwarf type. Excerpt from The Tree Planter and Plant Propagator: Being a Practical Manual on the Propagation of Fruit Trees The propagation of plants is a most useful and inter esting art; and although in most cases it certainly requires care, patience, and perseverance, yet there is a pleasure connected therewith that is quite original in its nature, and those who are masters of the art of propagation are as far in advance of the ordinary course of gardening as an inventor of a piece of machinery is before the man who merely makes the machine according to a given plan. Excerpt from Nursery Propagation and Topworking of the Macadamia Fruit and nut trees require a long time to reach maturity and only a few can be grown per acre; consequently, great value and importance should be attached to each tree. When planted, the grower should have a reasonable expectancy as to the future performance of the tree. This can best be attained when definite varieties of known performance abilities are planted.
