Mootools is a light, modular JavaScript framework that makes adding Ajax, animations, and interactive elements to your site a breeze. But it's more than fancy effects and shortcuts; Mootools enhances the JavaScript language and makes writing clean, object–oriented code almost pleasant. Unlocking the power of Mootools, and therefore JavaScript, isn't that hard, but knowing where to start can be. Mootools Essentials aims to help you accomplish that task with the following: Illustrations of nearly every class and function in the library Real–world examples of how to use them Written by Mootools user/contributor and Mootorial author, Aaron Newton. Pro JavaScript with MooTools is unlike any other JavaScript book on the market today. While similar books focus on either JavaScript as a language of the browser or how to use JavaScript frameworks, Pro JavaScript with MooTools fills the gap between these topics and moves beyond—exploring the advanced features of JavaScript and how the MooTools framework uses these features to further improve the language itself. The book itself takes a unique three-pronged approach. It first walks you through the advanced features of JavaScript and the MooTools framework, including native augmentation and type creation, a comprehensive discussion of JavaScript functions, object-oriented programming with native JavaScript and MooTools Classes, and the MooTools Class internals. You’ll then learn all about Javascript in the DOM: the Elements classes and its internals, the MooTools Event system, Selector engines and MooTools Slick, Ajax and the Request Object, and animation and the Fx classes. The final section really sets the book apart from all others, as it discusses JavaScript outside the browsers. You’ll take an in-depth look at CommonJS and MooTools, using MooTools outside the browser to build ORM, creating simple CommonJS applications via the MooTools Deck framework, and creating complex server-side applications using Raccoon.

JavaScript is the industry standard client-side scripting language that is used in web applications.Professional JavaScript Frameworks: Prototype, YUI, Ext JS, Dojo and MooTools offers an examination of some of the top JavaScript (JS) frameworks that are available, with practical examples and explanations of what each does best. Over the past few years, there’s been a small renaissance in JavaScript as a language. A variety of projects have sprung up to build reusable JS libraries and frameworks — and at this point, a good number of them have matured and shown staying power that they’re worth taking a serious look at and relying on in professional projects. JavaScript has grown in popularity in parallel with the Web and today is supported by all major browsers and new web technologies. JavaScript has been extended over time to deliver high-performing and incredibly impressive Web user experiences, using technologies including Adobe Flash, AJAX, and Microsoft Silverlight. As JavaScript is used increasingly for “serious” development on the Web, the lessons that have been learned and the tools that have been invented along the way are being consolidated and shared by developers in the form of libraries and frameworks. However, since JavaScript is such a flexible and dynamic language, each framework can present very different approaches to the problems of web development — each with its own pros and cons. Coverage of the individual libraries and frameworks includes: Prototype: Extending and Enhancing DOM Elements Prototype: Handling Cross-Browser Events Prototype: Simplifying AJAX and Dynamic Data Prototype: Working with Forms Prototype: Manipulating Common Data Structures and Functions Prototype: Extending Prototype Yahoo! User Interface Library (YUI): Traversing and Manipulating the DOM with YUI YUI: Handling Cross-Browser Events YUI: Using Animation and Drag and Drop YUI: Simplifying AJAX and Dynamic Loading YUI: Building User Interfaces with Widgets Enhancing Development with the YUI Core YUI: Dealing with Data, Tables, and Charts Working with YUI CSS Tools Building and Deploying YUI ExtJS: Architecture and Library Conventions ExtJS: Elements, DomHelper, and Templates ExtJS: Components, Layouts, and Windows ExtJS: Handling Data and Talking with the Server ExtJS: DataViews and Grids ExtJS: Form Controls, Validation Dojo: Enhancing Development with Dojo Core Dojo: Manipulating the DOM Dojo: Handling Events Dojo: Composing Animations Dojo: Working with AJAX and Dynamic Data Dojo: Building User Interfaces with Widgets Building and Deploying Dojo Expanding Dojo Enhancing Development with MooTools MooTools: Manipulating the DOM and Handling Events MooTools: Simplifying AJAX and Handling Dynamic Data MooTools: Building User Interfaces and Using Animation

1 The Third International OPAALS Conference was an opportunity to explore and discuss digital ecosystem research issues as well as emerging and future trends in the field. The conference was organized by IPTI – Instituto de Pesquisas em Tecnologia e Inovação (www. ipti. org. br). IPTI is a member of the OPAALS Framework P- gramme 7 Network of Excellence, which is led by the London School of Economics and Political Science. OPAALS is a multi-disciplinary research network of excellence for developing the science and technology behind digital ecosystems. The conference was held within the scope of a broader EU–Brazil bilateral workshop hosted by IPTI in cooperation with the Brazilian government and the European Commission and designed to foster EU support of information and communications technologies (ICT) enablement and socio-economic development in Brazil. The event was held in the city of Aracajú, Sergipe, in the northeast of Brazil, during March 22–23, 2010. Aracajú is the capital of the state of Sergipe and is located on the coast, a tropical region with lush vegetation, rivers and mangroves and an e- nomic landscape dominated by fisheries, tourism and the challenges associated with fostering local economic development in the presence of low ICT penetration. Digital ecosystems (DEs) in some ways represent the next generation of ICT and Internet usage. Applicable to many contexts, they will perhaps have the greatest effect in enabling small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to compete on the global stage.
