Throughout its history, persecutions and martyrdom have been Christianity's faithful companions. Remarkably enough, Christians have always valued martyrdom in a positive way. This positive evaluation of martyrdom most certainly has to do with the absolute, uncompromising nature of it. The martyrs' lives and deaths represent the most uncompromising of answers to the divine call. The focus of the contributions in this volume is not in the first place on reconstructing the historical events of the martyr's life and death "wie es eigentlich gewesen ist," but on the discourse generated by this event as mediated in texts. More than a Memory aims to explore the reciprocal relationship between this discourse of martyrdom and the construction of Christian identity. It will do so by presenting a number of test cases in which this dynamic can be seen at work. They will lead the reader through the entire history of Christianity, starting with the Martyrdom of Lyons and Vienne in the second century and ending in the Latin America of the 1960's. Each article will present a test case of discourse-analysis, attempting to explore the issue of how a document or coherent group of documents contributed to create a distinct Christian identity. Taken together, the essays provide an array of examples of how martyrdom impinged on the way Christian identity has been negotiated in the Christian past. In doing this, the volume at the same time illustrates the sheer importance of martyrdom and the reflection and writing about it throughout the history of Christianity until today.

Carol Grace's first book, "Reflections of a life well spent" was autobiographical in nature, while "More than a Memory" is more diverse, including poems of nature, poems written as a tribute to others, and poems of faith and inspiration. Mrs. Grace says this about her newest collection of poems: "More than a Memory" deals with everyday observations and the simple joy of letting words spill from my thoughts and onto paper. I have had a love affair with words all of my life. Poetry happens when thought becomes image, image becomes word, and words join together to form meaning that is often unique to each reader. It is my hope that "More Than a Memory" will trigger your own fond memories, and moreover, that you would be encouraged, if not challenged, to continue to make new memories, not letting the days get away from you." "More than a Memory" is not a book for the literary few, but for everyone who loves to hear a good story. Poetry has the ability to convey an entire story with an economy of words. You might find yourself reading the entire book in one sitting, but more likely you will read just a few poems at a time, luxuriating over the way the words make you feel. Although the subject matter may be bleak, the poem can still be beautiful because of word choice and the way it sounds when read aloud. Carol's poetry is written with the knowledge that there is power in the word, and we must learn to choose our words wisely. May the words in "More than a Memory" inspire you, bring a laugh or two, and comfort you.

"You're gorgeous. Even better looking than the day I fell in love with you."The words are a constant reminder of what true love is. Olivia Dawson's alarm goes off at the same time every day and she disappears into her room to hear Duncan's voice, see his face, miss him even more for being untouchable. Olivia loves with her entire heart, and her love for Duncan is unmatched, but there's something about her new roommate she just can't seem to ignore-no matter how hard she tries. "I miss you so much.""Can't be more than I miss you."The words are a constant reminder of how unavailable Olivia is, and Bryson Daniels isn't one for competition off the baseball field, but since the moment he knocked on the door to his new apartment and his roommate "Ollie" wasn't who he expected, he can't help but consider bending a few of his rules-even if it means heeding to Olivia's. "I love you, sweet cheeks. Chat with you later?" Bryson hears the conversations through the paper thin walls, but there's a pain inside Olivia he can't seem to walk away from. He vows to be there for her when the voice on the other side of the computer inevitably breaks her heart, but will he ever be able to compete with someone who's more than a memory?

Composer and broadcaster Andrew Ford considers the nature and purpose of music in the context of his own life - what it is, why it means so much to us and how it works in our lives. From his early childhood in the Beatles-crazy Liverpool of the 1960s to his evolving work as a composer, choral conductor, concert promoter, critic, university teacher and radio presenter, he shares the vivid musical experiences that have shaped his life. The Memory of Music is a moving and evocative memoir that will appeal to music lovers everywhere. Ford excels at capturing the way different kinds of music affect us - how a piece of religious music can transport us regardless of our beliefs, or how a pop song can call up an instant recollection from the past (a family holiday, a girlfriend).
