Given the presumed dominance of American sport, many fans throughout the hemisphere find it difficult to envision the role of sport beyond the confines of their own continent. And yet, world sport consists of so much more than the games Americans play and so much more than the stereotype of cricket for the elite and football for the working class. As worldwide sport continues to gain in popularity, we also see parallels to many aspects visible in North American sport, particularly celebrity and all its trappings and pitfalls. The success of athletes from other countries in basketball and ice hockey, and the proliferation of stars imported and now exported to and from North America, provides some better examples of sport's international power. It also creates a very new kind of sport celebrity, albeit one that often shows a rather limited reach beyond that star's own country or continent. Thus, rather than focusing on the Western Hemisphere, this collection of some of world sport's most heralded celebrities (including stars of Motocross, surfing, distance running, and more) serves as a sort of passport to many places that make up our global sporting environment.

In the last twenty years, Indian cricket has been transformed. With the arrival of global television networks, mass-media coverage and multinational sponsors, cricket has become big business and India has become the economic driving force in the world game. For the first time a developing country has become a major player in the international sports arena. This fully updated and revised edition of Mihir Bose's classic history is a unique account of the Indian cricket phenomenon. Drawing on a combination of extensive research and personal experience, Bose traces the development of the Indian game from its beginnings as a colonial pastime to its coming of age as a national passion and now a global commercial powerhouse. This illuminating study reveals Indian cricket's central place in modern India’s identity, culture and society. Insightful, honest and challenging, Bose tackles the myths and controversies of Indian cricket. He considers the game in terms of race, caste, politics, national consciousness and ambition, money, celebrity and the media, evoking all the unpredictability, frustration and glory that is the magic of Indian cricket.

At the George, Geoffrey Moorhouse's testament to a lifelong love of rugby league, was shortlisted for the inaugural William Hill Sports Book of the Year award in 1989. 'The very soul of rugby league, a sport that has been called 'the toughest in the world', lives within the pages of At the George. From first acquaintance some seasons ago, I believed it to be the finest book ever penned on the thirteen-a-side game... Today, the book remains as fresh as ever and as firmly placed on its pedestal... It is a seminal work, a precious treasure of the game. The book is from the heart, written by a man of intellect, who was bowled over by what he saw one May afternoon at Maine Road, Manchester, back in 1946, and who never lost his affection for the game.' Ian Head, from his new Preface to this edition
