Based on research from the National Reading Research Center (NRRC) at the Universities of Georgia and Maryland, this issue presents the contributors' sythesized work on reading motivation and engagement. Articles are devoted to the following topics: * the general motivation constructs related to reading; * home influences on reading motivation; * readers' responses to different types of text; * influences of classroom contexts; and * types of assessment on children's motivation.

Reading with Writing in Mind meets the needs of school districts and teachers by providing rationale and activities that increase students’ literacy skills. Relevant reading and writing standards are aligned with Common Core Standards and preface each chapter’s activities. Textboxes provide adaptation ideas for students with moderate to severe special needs, English language learners, or low performing students. This text discusses motivating reading comprehension covering subjects such as classroom contexts for engaged reading, scaffolding for motivation and engagement in reading, the cognitive strategies of reading comprehension and science inquiry in the CORI framework.

Success in mathematics and science requires students to process and comprehend various forms of text; yet, many teachers feel ill-equipped to promote the development of literacy skills within the context of developing conceptual understanding of mathematics and science. Many content area literacy resources do not provide an adequate development of the complexities involved in dealing with mathematics and science texts.
