In order to be able to appreciate fully the advantages of being born in that fa vored Spot, by comparing it with other regions more or less remote, I have wandered rather extensively up and down our own fair land, out West and down East, to say nothing about the sunny South; and am now about to enlarge my view by crossing the Atlantic; in other words, to complete my Sphere of observation by taking in the other bend-sphere. In a nation struggling to establish its own identity, all kinds of Americans, for all kinds of reasons, were enchanted with Europe. A European trip, whether extravagant or modest, could serve social advancement, aesthetic enrichment, or personal curiosity. Travel allowed men and women, the descendants of European settlers or African slaves, to shed their familiar surroundings and comfortable personas, adopt new roles, and measure themselves against the European experience.
