Multidisciplinary Perspectives On Peace And Conflict Research

This book represents the scholarly work of the network «European Doctorate Enhancement in Peace and Conflict Studies» (EDEN), a broad training and research network linking scholars, departments and universities interested in thinking and rethinking proposals, concepts and methodologies for the expanding field of Peace and Conflict Studies from different disciplines such as law, history, sociology, anthropology, international relations, and political science. The Network has been functioning since the year 1996 and aims mainly to develop the level and quality of the discussion, to enhance the collaboration and coordination within the European academic community —encompassing the diversity of theoretical approaches in the area—, to promote intellectual understanding, and to create an appropriate institutional infrastructure and consistent financial support for academic research. The Network has also been consistently fostering the exchange and mobility of graduate students through summer Intensive Programmes and Marie Curie Fellowships so as to develop a critical mass of inter-disciplinary comparative research expertise, providing access to tutorials, methodology courses, and significant human and practical resources for a better understanding of research questions, conceptual debates, and methodological challenges. The final purpose of the network is to generate sustained debate and exchange among policy makers, NGO's, media professionals and academics, in order to facilitate a scholarly dialogue and ongoing feedback between research, knowledge dissemination and policy.

Peace, Conflict and Identity is the third book in the junior series of the EDEN (European Doctoral Enhancement Programme in Peace and Conflict Studies) and contains cuting edge research that was first delivered in a series of presentations by PhD students at two of the EDEN Intensive Programmes held at the universities of Deusto and Graz in 2007 and 2009 respectively. The book has been edited in the spirit that publishing work whilst still engaged on a post-graduate research programme is an essential element of early career progression. As such, several of the contributors to this book have since gained their doctorates.

Bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives on the future of UN peace operations, this book explores the interrelated dynamics of UN peace operations and peacebuilding practices through the lenses of conflict resolution, protection and accountability. The collection includes coverage of issues ranging from strengthening partnerships between regional institutions and the UN; improving UN policing and stabilisation mechanisms; the application of new technologies in peace operations and implementing security sector reform; to ending sexual exploitation and abuse and enhancing the protection of children. Authors place people at the centre of peacekeeping by interrogating current and past UN initiatives, chart how peacekeeping is evolving in response to changes in global security, assess reform and norm change within missions themselves, and offer original perspectives on the future of UN peace operations. Contributions also include new and innovative theoretical and empirical research located across multiple disciplines, including political science, history, law, gender studies, and criminology.

This book examines how the violence of conflict is transformed in the post-conflict period. Post-conflict studies seek to illuminate, theorise, and narrate the processes by which societies transition from periods of overt and violent conflict to periods of relative stability and peace. Most of the research carried out on post-conflict societies has taken place within disciplinary bounds. In contrast, this volume breaches those boundaries; though each author is grounded in a particular discipline, the chapters have been written in a spirit of interdisciplinarity. The focus of the volume is how the violence of conflict is transformed in the post-conflict period into processes that the editors have categorised as criminalisation, medicalisation and missionisation. Comprised of essays written by a diverse group of scholars and activists from anthropology, political science, international relations, law, education, religion, and military history, each section of the book looks at the concept of post-conflict in a way that problematises its common usage and highlights the importance of strongly interdisciplinary research into post-conflict societies. Kristine Höglund is Associate Professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University. She has a PhD in Peace and Conflict Research from Uppsala University Sweden (2004). She is author of Peacemaking in the Shadow of Violence. Magnus Öberg is Associate Professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Peace Research (since 2006). He has a PhD in Peace and Conflict Research from Uppsala University (2003) and is co-editor of Resources, Governance, and Civil Conflict (Routledge, 2008).
