Multilayer Corpus Studies

This volume explores the opportunities afforded by the construction and evaluation of multilayer corpora, an emerging methodology within corpus linguistics that brings about multiple independent parallel analyses of the same linguistic phenomena, and how the interplay of these concurrent analyses can help to push the field into new frontiers. The first part of the book surveys the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of multilayer corpus work, including an exploration of various technical and data collection issues. The second part builds on the groundwork of the first half to show multilayer corpora applied to different subfields of linguistic study, including information structure research, referentiality, discourse models, and functional theories of discourse analysis, synthesizing these different discussions in a detailed case study of non-standard language in its concluding chapter. Advancing the multilayer corpus linguistic research paradigm into new and different directions, this volume is an indispensable resource for graduate students and researchers in corpus linguistics, syntax, semantics, construction studies, and cognitive grammar.

This handbook is a comprehensive practical resource on corpus linguistics. It features a range of basic and advanced approaches, methods and techniques in corpus linguistics, from corpus compilation principles to quantitative data analyses. The Handbook is organized in six Parts. Parts I to III feature chapters that discuss key issues and the know-how related to various topics around corpus design, methods and corpus types. Parts IV-V aim to offer a user-friendly introduction to the quantitative analysis of corpus data: for each statistical technique discussed, chapters provide a practical guide with R and come with supplementary online material. Part VI focuses on how to write a corpus linguistic paper and how to meta-analyze corpus linguistic research. The volume can serve as a course book as well as for individual study. It will be an essential reading for students of corpus linguistics as well as experienced researchers who want to expand their knowledge of the field.

This volume comprises nine contributions that were written by up-and-coming corpus-based researchers with varied areas of expertise, who were all disciples of Douglas Biber sometime in the past two decades. These papers cover a wide variety of linguistic analyses and describe the principles of the Flagstaff school: a careful procedure for language corpora collection with special consideration for corpus size, representativeness, sampling and systematic analysis; the use of computer programming abilities that allow the posing of corpus-based research questions never asked before; and a strong emphasis on the combination of quantitative methods based on sound and innovative statistical procedures complemented with comprehensive qualitative functional analyses of the language. This volume has been edited in honor of Douglas Biber, a pioneer of the American school of corpus-based research.

This book builds on Baker and Egbert’s previous work on triangulating methodological approaches in corpus linguistics and takes triangulation one step further to highlight its broader applicability when implemented with other linguistic research methods. The volume showcases research methods from other linguistic disciplines and draws on ten empirical studies from a range of topics in psycholinguistics, applied linguistics, and discourse analysis to demonstrate how these methods might be most effectively triangulated with corpus-linguistic methods. A concluding chapter synthesizes these findings as a means of pointing the way toward future directions for triangulation and its implications for future linguistic research.
